My DS, Jake, who was born at 33 weeks and is now 35 weeks and in the NICU developed a fever and was started on antibiotics. His blood cultures came back last night as positive. Has anyone else had this experience? I'm so scared, he's so young and to have his blood cultures come back positive, he's septic. When I look it up online the information is even scarier...help please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christie,
((Hugs)) I'm so sorry to hear your having an unforeseen setback. I do not have any experience with Sepsis, but will be happy to check into anyone that has that can be of assistance.
Much love and many wishes that this resolves quickly!!

Christie, how is Jake doing today? Have you had a chance to talk about your concerns with the doctors?

Christie, I don't know anything about this. What have the neonatologists said to you?

They redid all the tests today, new blood cultures, new urine and a nasal swab. They want to confirm a positive result with the new tests. Since starting the antibiotics his fever is gone, his breathing is better and he is becoming a good eater. Hoepfully we will have more answers tomorrow.

As if that wasnt enough though, poor little guy has a questionable mass on his left thigh and his left leg won't straighten out. They put an ortho consult in, they should be in tomorrow. Has anyone experienced anything like this with a premie, my mom thinks maybe his muscle/joints may have not finished growing in utereo yet???

I am so clue less and feel so helpless. Hopefully it's something small. They originally thought the mass was from the vitamin K injection he got at birth, but since he is two weeks old now and it hasn't resolved, they are a little concerned.

I'll keep you guys updated.
Thanks.

Christie.. my little girl had sepsis.. sadly my story isn't a happy ending.. BUT the good thing is they caught it earlier and they are giving him antibiotics. That is a very good sign that his fever is gone and his breathing is better. In my case they didn't catch it in time. Sepsis can be devastating but it can also be treatable and it sounds like they are doing a good job and Jake is a tough little man.

Have they done an ultrasound on the mass?

Let us know how things are going. I don't think either of my girls had positive cultures but I know they were both given strong antibiotics while in the NICU.
