Chronic Pneumonia Question

Hi ladies. My son was a 27 weeker that weighed 1 pound 12 ounces. He was on a vent/ocillator for a few weeks. Due to that, he has some lung damage. This is his 2nd time with pneumonia in 2 years. Both required a trip to the hospital-one with an overnight stay. Is this going to be a chronic thing? He uses a neublizer only when he has a bad uri or cold. We were not able to see our regular ped as he had the week off and didn't really think to ask the doc we saw as I was tired and flustered. What have you experienced? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you consulted with a pediatric pulmonologist? I'm sure you have plenty to keep up with, but this might be something that needs a specialist to evaluate.

We had to neb xopenex every day with my son (26 weeker) for a while just to keep everything good (and added Pulmicort when he had any symptoms of illness) for almost the first year and a half of his life. He did develop pneumonia when he was 2 and did both xoponex and Pulmicort that time, too.

We saw one a year ago. Good thought-maybe call for a recheck appt with him in a few weeks. Thanks.

Our son has had several bouts of pneumonia due to his chronic lung disease - former 26 weeker. We were told the lungs continue to rebuild new lung tissue until 8 years of age. After that, the lungs will pretty much have repaired as much as they are going to. Unfortunately, I think this is one of the side effects of prematurity. We try to prevent colds at all costs, as these can easily turn to pneumonia. My advice is....hand wash, hand wash, hand sanitizer and keep away from other people that are sick.
