weight loss?

Does anyone know about how much a baby could lose before gaining and what is safe or when to worry.

My boys lost weight in the hospital but when they got home started to gain, while on the other hand Samara continues to lose and its only ounces but I thought by know she would be going back towards her birth weight. she was 6 12 and is now 6 5 after 1 wk old.

Any suggestions?

I think it depends on the baby. BOth my boys lost about 3-6 oz's when they left the hospital and by 1 week later had gained it and a ton more back. But then again they are BIG boys (both in the 90/90 range by 6 weeks from the 5-30% range at birth)

I think most ped's want them to be back to birth weight within a week but the most important thing is that she is gaining weight. If she isn't gaining any weight you need to contact your Ped.

she isnt gaining at all. my boys did the same thing and they are big boys also. they have a wt check on 8/3. so please baby gain some wt

are you breast ot bottle feeding? its more normal to lose more and be slower gaining with breast.
My DD was born weighing 8 lb 12 ounces. At one week she was 7 lb 8 ounces! But she ate good, doc said she looked very alert and healthy and told me to come back in one more week. The next weekshe had gained to 7 lb 12 ounces but still a pound below birthweight. But again she was very healthy and alert. The next week she was up to 8 pounds even. The next week, finally at 4 weeks old she jumped to 8 lb 15 ounces and was finally back at birthwieght! I think peds just look at the wholepicture of the baby and decide when to worry. Good luck.

She is on the bottle. Me and her had some complications at birth that enabled me to breastfeed her right away and since she had problems eating at first I was unable to successfully try later. I kind of blamed that to the reason why she wasnt gaining, I breasfed my boys and they grew like weeds and I felt like I was letting her down not being able to do the same for her.

E-mail me. I have had growing troubles with some of my kids. The critiria is babies should not loose more than 10% of their body weight. But, the other problem is gaining weight. Did Samara have trouble latching or was she too weak to get anything? Has the ped checked her suck? Sometimes it can feel strong but, be inefficient even with a bottle. The solution we found was to "inject" bm with a syringe and tiny catheter into Janie's mouth for 6wks because she has oral low tone (which at the time we didn't know). Gosh, Sandra, if it was me I wouldn't wait until the 3rd. Call the ped and ask for a weight check.

Ainsley lost an entire pound in 5 days after she was born. She was 7 lbs 1 oz when born and exactly 6 lbs when we took her home. Even though she was 36 weeks, she had latch and suck problems like a 34 week old. I was unable to breastfeed and finally found a bottle that worked for her mouth -- Dr. Brown's. They were expensive, but were the only ones she could get her mouth around...

Samara was unable to latch on the nipple so they put her on a preemie nipple that they had in the hospital as well as a pacifier for preemies. By the time I was able to breastfeed she refused to take the breast. She still sometimes acts like she has a hard time from the preemie nipples, I have to slow her eating down. I also had to start giving her gas drops b/c every time she would finish eating she would cry and ball up but since the drops she is doing better.

She started to run a fever yesterday ( low grade) so I am taking her in to make sure that all is okay before the weekend hits and will let you know what her weight is today

I hope everything is alright, I know how it is with little ones, even now with my DS being over a year when he gets a fever I am going nuts about it. Good Luck and hope she has gained some.

Well samara is ok and was told to give her tylenol but no apparent reason to why a little feverish. Also She Gained 2 ounces ( now is 6 7) I never thought I would be happy over some ounces. :) Amazing how a little little one can make you go crazy. Thanks for the advise and responses.
