Some answers finally!

Samara started to get some diarrhea today so during my WIC appt they MADE me make her appt. to see the doc right away. She has not gained any weight so he finally admitted to her failing to thrive and said that a higher calorie preemie formula might do the trick. We started one and within 20 min she was projectile vomiting so we went back and she was switched to Pregestimil formula and is doing better. She was ranging in the 5-10% for her.
The explanation that was given on her diarrhea and her irratable and stomach pains was that she should have been on a preemie formula from the start and that the formulas were hurting her stomach from not being able to digest properly.
Please pray that this works for her, it has been several hours and she is doing okay.She goes back in Thursday for another weight check.

Im glad you at least have an answer for what is wrong.. Hoping it will work for her. Wyatt was on Similac Special Care 24 calorie for about 2mo maybe 3 and then they switched him to Alimentum which he was on until 1yr. Now he is on Peptamen Junior (for kids with GI problems) Good Luck

Donna that was the formula she vomited up. The doc thinks that it is either the lactose or the Similac altogether that she cant handle so he said either way with her issues he is not going to test it and just eliminate both for 2 months so she can get her wieght back. I never heard of either one of these until today

The reason they took Wyatt off the 24 cal is because they think he has a milk allergy or something, it just took him a while to have more problems with it. Good luck!!

I know what you are going through. It took us forever to figure out Max had a milk allergy. It was so inconsistent, but it finally got so severe, he would vomit everytime he had anything with milk in it, including my breastmilk if I ate anything with milk in it, and I mean even a tiny amount. And soy formula gave him diareha. We finally figured out he had these protein intolerances and moved him to nutramigen, but he still was throwing up. The milk protein is simplified in this which wasn't enough for him. So he finally went on neocate and then Peptamen Jr when he was about 14months. Thankfully, we tested soy at about 16 months and he was fine with it, and we just started milk, and he can tolerate it, although I am not giving him straight milk, just things made with milk.

Anyway, I was going to point out that if the preemie formula was bothering her, you can use any formula and make it 24 cal, 27 cal or 30 cal, depending on what you need. You just have to use a little math and mix more formula to get the extra calories. We do it all of the time!

you know I hear of lots of kids that have problems with Similiac, both my boys had probelms with the formula too.

Hopefully, though with the new stuff things will turn around for her and she will do fine!

Thanks everyone,
My 2 boys ended up on Nutramigen from lactose problems with regular formula and have an allergy to soy like me. i am not sure what is going to happen to her but she is not having anymore diarrhea since the switch. I talked to her WIC lady when she called and she mentioned that the only other option if she still has a problem with the Pregestimil is the Neocate formula. she also said that I should speak to my doc about her being on the Pregestimil and possibly have some stuff ruled out like Pyloric Stenosis ( which my youngest son had so I know there is a chance for her to have) since she is still spitting up and getting hiccups after every feeding. The number one thing is that she start gaining wieght and SOON!

Please pray for her that all is okay with her.

Many prayers!
J was hospitalized with dehydration from her formula intol. I know how serious this can be.
Lucky for us it was a simple change to Nutram.
What about an appt. with a gastrointerologist?
Just to rule out reflux, stomach problems, things of this nature?
In fact the more I think about it... I urge you to do so.
