I found this great article on WebMd about the steroids. It says they're usually given when delivery is expected between 24-34 weeks but, just thought you might want the other info it provides. http://my.webmd.com/hw/being_pregnant/hw222067.asp?lastselectedguid={5FE84E90-BC77-4056-A91C-9531713CA348}

Like Julie said, I think they only give the shots up through 34 weeks. After that if the lungs are still immature some hospitals will inject artifical sufflactant into the lungs to mature them quickly. Mason was born right at 36 weeks and his were in transition (bascially they could do nothing to help him out) and he spent a few days on O2.

I had my youngest at 36 weeks and we had an amnio to determine if he needed steroid shots (I think it depends where you are). His lungs were mature so they decided he didn't need any shots and he was delivered. He was 5#5oz and just fine--no NICU--not even overnight. Came home with me. (And back with me when I had to be readmitted a week postpartum). :) Hang in there!!

Hey Meg!

I have a Katherine Grace as well. She was born 10/13/03. She was a 34 weeker and did not have steroid shots. The peri could tell instantly after drawing the amnio that her lungs were ready to go. (They had to do the test, of course, but he said he could pretty much tell on sight).

At least you know it's for the safety of the baby and I'm not aware of any majorly adverse reactions. :)

Good Luck (and you have super taste in names!)

I had Connor at 35 weeks 4 days and had two steroid shots at about 32 weeks, I think. He was born at 6 lbs 3 oz and was in the NICU for a week due to bilirubin and feeding issues. He's now 8lbs 6oz and doing great, except for some reflux.

I had two steroid shots a 33 weeks and delivered at 35 weeks at 6lbs 5oz. My son stayed in the NICU for 7 days for low blood sugar, apnea and jaundice. He is now 2 months and is 8lbs 8oz. The shots ended up really helping my sons lung. I hope everything goes well for you.

I had the steroid shot when I went into labor at 33 weeks. I really think it helped Grant survive. If he would have had lung issues in addition to GERD, Sepsis, and NEC, I do not want to think about what might have happened. We spent a month in NICU but it was all gastrointestinal related. His breathing was always pretty good! Hope everything works out! Good Luck!

I had my daughter at 29 weeks after getting the steroid shots at about 27 weeks. Although she still had to be intubated and was in the NICU for two months, it could have been much worse without the shots. She is a healthy 14 month old today.

This is a little late but I though I'd add my experience.

I was admitted to the hospital at about 31 wks. I was given two steroid shots (1/day). Although I never had an amnio I had numerous ultrasounds so the Docs could look at Olivia's lungs. These ultrasounds showed that her lungs were not fully developed yet and she had not begun "practicing" breathing.

I had an emergency c-section two days after the last shot. We were expecting the worst case senerio. To all of our surprise Olivia was born crying and screaming. Thanks to the steriod shots she was healthy and only needed extra oxygen about a week after delivery.
