Hannah's going to be a Radio Star!

Postby hannahsmom » Thu Nov 18, 2004 04:54 pm

We are going to be on the radio next Wednesday to share Hannah's story. The hospital where she was born (USA Children's and Women's in Mobile, AL) is having a radiothon to raise money for the hospital. I am going to talk about pre-e, and then share our experience. I probably won't have much time, but I will squeeze as much into our few minutes as possible! Hannah will hopefully say a few words too! Hannah has been on TV twice, once for a caps for babies donation at Christmas, and they needed to show babies in the NICU (I also knew the camera man, so he made sure she made her TV debut!) Then, she was on the local children's miracle network telethon back in May or June. She was also a guest on the radio for a Ronald McDonald fundraiser. Hannah is a little Diva already at age 3 - boy, am I in for it later on! We will have to drive about an hour and a half each way for the radio interview, but we will get to visit the NICU staff and there isn't anything I won't do for that hospital. I consider the NICU nurses our angels on earth.

Thanks, ladies - I will let you know how it goes. I've been depressed lately because of her gymnastics coach, and now she's having problems in her school. She's ADHD and no one wants to deal with her. They think she's just being bad, but it's more than that. We can't medicate until she's at least 4. When she's feeling good, she's the world's sweetest child. But when she has a rough day, everyone knows it. So, the radio show will be a fun break.

Suzanna
Have you thought about seeing a pyschologist to work on behavior therapy? At this age, the therapy isn't necessarily with the child, but rather helping the parents find better ways of interacting with their child, including finding ways aorund the difficulties. It has worked very very well on Alex and even some on Mason.

I had no idea that some of our reactiosn to Alex's behavior was what was making the situtation even worse. Simply things like instead of telling him Alex go sit down, but rephrasing it to Alex can you try to sit down would make such a significant change in his behavior (simply becuase he gets to make the decision to sit down instead of thinking order must rebel).

Alex (and Mason) both are at least borderline ADHD/ADD but they are not planning on medicating ALex until he is at least 6 years old (in order to give him time to work out the language issues to see if that helps whats going on plus they aren't sure whether he should get ADD drugs or OCD drugs).

From what we have seen, sometimes simply changing the words used around the child (and subsequently teaching others around the child how to connect with them) can make a huge huge difference in behavior. We feel much more comfertable tkaing Alex out now because we have more tools to counteract his overstimulation. I nfact, this summer he took swim lessons and behaved rather well.
