I just have to interject that I had a Copper 7 IUD at 23 after the birth of my first son and I had an ectopic pregnancy that nearly did me in--Code Blue in the ambulance, 2 IVs and a whole lot of pain--and my doctor reminded me that the IUD only prevents pregnancy in the uterus--not in the tubes and in fact increases the risk of a tubal pregnancy. I had mine taken out but up till then had really loved it. I would say if you get one to just be aware of that fact and have abnormal bleeding and cramping checked out. I had had "my period" for two weeks and the doctor didn't even do a pregnancy test. The paramedics diagnosed the ectopic immediately--course, I was in shock and was like--no no--no chance I am pregnant--I have been menstruating for two weeks and have an IUD! Needless to say--I have less than positive feelings about the IUD.
