Oh by the way, Emily also had severe reflux. She was on special formula, I had to quit breast feeding her. She was also on zantac and reglan which worked she was able to come off the meds when she started eating solids.

I have a 35 weeker that was born november 21st. and she was sent home on apnea monitor and on caffiene and also zantac and reglan for reflux. Her peditrician told me after her first visit ( she was 3 weeks by then) to stop the meds and monitor whenever I wanted. (mind you, the neonatal docs wanted her on it all for at least 6 months) I stopped the meds and not the monitor and had quite a few episodes that the montior claimed she wasnt breathing. I was told she needed the monitor because of her reflux; that she would hold her breath from the pain and she might forget to breathe again. Every now and then she spits up kind of forcefully. I wonder if maybe I need a second opinion on whether or not she should still have at least the zantac? Not to mention she grunts alot and its really hard grunting, is that normal? As you can see my doctor is no help. My son was also early due to preeclampsia and I had no problems with him he went home in three days.

Dana,
I always think second opinions are good, especially when your gut tells you something different (it is usually right). Being on Zantac can't hurt anything and especially since he does have episodes of apnea it may not be a bad idea. Many children are on Zantac way past 6months, well into the 18month zone. You may want to check with another pediatrician in that office or I would suggest going to a different clinic all together.

Just wanted to tell you that the grunting is probably part of the reflux. Ainsley grunted and screamed a lot with hers. She was on Prilosec (compounded for infants) until she was 11 months old. Zantac never really helped and Reglan has so many horrible side effects (I was given it during pregnancy), that we went on to the Prilosec. You may want to see a pedi gastroenterologist, as they are experts in reflux. We would also prop Ainsley up quite a bit when she slept, which helped.

Hmmm... might be onto a good survey topic here. My 35 weeker (in the NICU for almost 2 weeks with blood sugar/eating issues) is now 4 years old. It took us over a year to have his reflux diagnosed, but the early months were horrible. He cried so much as a newborn I had to have friends come in to take shifts holding him b/c I couldn't take it. Zantac did not work for him. Made him throw up even more. Once diagnosed he was on 10 mg Prilosec (before it was OTC) 1x/day. We broke a capsule into his cereal and he ate it. At $10 a pill, we made sure he got every bead. Miracle cure. He was 3 yrs old before he outgrew it. He was gavage fed in the NICU so I often suspect if all that irritation (plus the preemie status) contributed to the reflux. To make matters worse, he also had an undiagnosed milk allergy all that time.

We are also dealing with reflux with Indigo. I have been adding rice cereal to her bottles and propping her up for an hour after feeding and she is sleeping in an inclined bed. But, this was not helpful for long. The ped just started her on Zantac drops 2x a day as of yesterday. It smells horrible and Indy makes the funniest faces when she takes it. I am going through as many clothes as she is with her projectile vomiting, lol[:p]yucky I know. She grunts a lot too, I thought it was normal for a baby. She also coughs all the time, just little coughs, not coughing fits or anything. She usually vomits after the cough. I hope the Zantac helps, I don't have many clothes that fit right now![:)]

Just wanted to update on how the Zantac was working. We are doing pretty good after she has been on this for a few days. It's like having a whole new child![:)] she is sleeping through the night now, 10:30pm-8am, though she still vomits up her morning feeding but the rest of the day is smooth sailing so far. She is happy and cooing all the time now, I can't believe how big she's getting![:)]

Could this be related to being delivered early? Hadley was only 3 weeks early, however she was REALLY jaudice and didn't gain weight well until she was almost 3 weeks old. Maybe the reflux could be relate?

Hadley has reflux and is being treated with Zantac 2X per day

I had my daughter Isabella at 36 weeks. She also had jaundice. When she was about 8 weeks they figured out she had reflux. She was put on zantac. Se still has it so bad in fact I called the doctor today and I am still waiting on a call back. She also has asthma and is on a nebulizer. Is the reflux at alll related to the preecalmpsia or her being early. I know noone knows but my doctor promised me there was no link but I am not so sure.
