Reflux poll...

Ariana (born at 35 weeks) has reflux and is currently on Prilosec 10mg/day. She was on Zantac for a while, but that eventually stopped working and we had to switch. She was on Nutramigen for a couple months and we got to switch over to soy formula a little bit ago. She also has the milk allergy. We got in right away for the reflux as my friend delivered at 35 weeks too and her little girl had reflux so we knew the symptoms right away. Her little one just went off meds, so it's nice to know there is an end in sight.[:)]

I was recently talking to my neighbor who also had a early baby and her pediatrician told her that baby's born before 38weeks are at a higher risk of having reflux. It makes sense seeing as thought the cardiac sphincter isn't developed yet. I am curious as to why pediatricians don't look for this, and why so many families struggle with fussy baby's. I would think peds would want to give families a heads-up on symptoms etc...so they could get the baby the treatment it may need.

Travis has reflux and he's a silent refluxer (is that a word?). Anyway, he was 32 weeks early and the neonatologists told me that almost all preemies have reflux due to the immaturity of their sphinkter muscle in the esophogus (I know my spelling is horrendous) Anyway, what a silent refluxer does is to spit up and then swallow it back down, so Travis actually doesn't ever hardly spit up except once in a while. He's being treated with Zantac and that seems to do okay, but the stuff tastes horrible even with added flavoring and he's getting harder and harder to get to take it the older he gets (he's now 5 months) Is Prilosec better tasting?

Thought I should put in another update since Indy was switched to Prevacid 1.6ml/day back on 2/11 after several days of the zantac not working. The prevacid smells horrible and its getting harder to get her to take it. She just spits it all out[:p] it is banana flavored and I don't think she likes that flavor either. She is doing much much better since then, she hasn't vomited since that beginning week on the prevacid[:)]

We are dealing with constipation issues though...anyone else have this in combo w/reflux? maybe due to the meds?

Wyatt is now taking 7.5mg /day of Prevacid, 1ml of zantac at nite amd 4 doses of Reglan a day of 1ml each. not to mention his singular and pulmicort that are also in the mix......

i hate trying to keep up with all this med, but he is eating better than he was to begin with. No spitting up or reflux episodes for the last 5 days he has been on all this.

Elizabeth, what kind of prevacid is Indigo taking, they give Wyatt small packs of powder to mix with water, they are an orange like color when mixed up and smell good, but i havent braved tasting it yet....lol...

The zantac is horrid, that peppermint smell.[xx(]

Anyone else have any problems with their baby being restless or more irritable with any of the meds Wyatt is taking?? He is extremely fussy when he is sleepy now, fights it alot more than he did before starting these meds.

Indy gets prevacid (15mg/5ml's) and takes 1.6ml's per day. It comes made up especially for her by a specialty pharmacy that breaks down the prevacid caps and then mixes it with a liquid and the flavoring. I have to reconstitute it each day when I give her dose(it requires lots of pounding and shaking to get it all back to a liquid state). I didn't know there were packets of it that you had to mix up. There must be several different ways to take it.

Donna, wow you have to give Wyatt alot of meds, poor little thing[:(] I have a hard enough time remembering to give Indy hers on time every day and getting her to actually take it in. I have to pin her down and then constantly scoop the amounts she spits out of her mouth back in her mouth[:I] she laughs at me when I do that, I think she thinks its a game now[:D]silly girl.

Donna,

The Reglan could definitely be making Wyatt restless. I know, from experience, that I felt like I was coming out of my skin when I had to take it, so I refused to give it to Ainsley when the pedi offered it to her. Have you tried Prilosec? That was the only one that helped my daughter, and it seems like they just keep adding meds to Wyatt's mix. Poor thing. I would definitely see what they could do in finding a substitute for Reglan. Do you think the Reglan makes a huge difference?

We had Ainsley's meds compounded at a compounding pharmacy, made from the adult meds. The upside is, they have 36 flavors to try, but the med looses it's efficacy weekly, so it is only good for two weeks.
Anyway.... That's my two cents :-)

I think the only reason they have given him so many meds at once is trying to heal his stomach, as they only give him a 2 mo script on all 3 of them. Then he said something about taking another look to see if was getting any better I think. I will find out more on the 4th. That is when my next appt is with his dr.

I will definately ask them then if anything else they can give him. He fights sleep bad enough all by himself , he doesnt need anything to make it worse..

Elizabeth, I would ask the pharmacy if you could get the little packs like I get, he has to take half a pack each day and I only have to mix it every other day. I can get more info on it if you want to check that out, and it isnt hard to mix either.

I do have a hard time remembering all the meds, as I take several, along with my daughter and Wyatts.

I'm going to call the pharmacy tomorrow to ask about those. Since we are leaving for CA in a little over a week and the prevacid we have now has to be kept in the fridge at all times. The packets would work much better I think since I don't have to worry about refridgeration on the long trip(driving).

I can't get myself to taste the prevacid for her either[:p]yuckkee! I can smell it and I don't want to take it. I try to make it into a game for her, smacking her lips away while I make faces at her and she giggles and spits it out[:D]

She used to take the zantac everyday but it stopped working after 2 weeks. She didn't mind taking that, she actually liked it[:p] that stuff smelled horrible too and had no extra flavoring added to it. Lord only knows how she was able to take that stuff, ick![:p]
