thought I'd update on my bp/weight issues. Well after being down in CA I have kicked the chocolate habit. I haven't had a symphony bar in 3 weeks![:)]thats seriously amazing. We will be hunting for a treadmill this weekend[:)]I am totally excited about that. Unfortunately I cannot avoid going on bp meds now. I had three different dr. appt's this week and my bp was 190/110, 140/104, 220/118, my pulse has stayed around 120. My dr put me on lisinopril today, I'll be starting it tonight. My bp was great up till about 6 weeks PP and has been rising swiftly in the past few weeks. I was trying to put off the meds by starting to change diet and exercise but my dr wasn't up for waiting any longer[:(] oh well. hopefully the meds will drop it down and then once my weight has dropped enough maybe I will be able to get rid of the meds, there's always hope isn't there? On a good note I did lose 10lbs over my trip[:D] though its probably all water weight and I was pretty sick the whole time, but I'll take weight loss in any form at this point[:D]LOL.

You know, I'm having the same problem (for the first time in my life). DD was born in June last year and my weight gain is really getting me miffed.

I'm not taking any meds I wasn't before I was pregnant, except that my hypertension meds have changed. Don't remember what I was taking before 3 months before TTC; then was on Aldomet for the 3 months prior to trying, got pregnant pretty quickly, switched to Labetalol for a few days around week 28 and then settled on Procardia the rest of the pregnancy. Started Diltiazem postpartum and am still on it.

One of you mentioned the Hypremesis. Yes, I was horribly nauseus from about week 3. In my 2nd trimester, I used Zofran to help w/it and it did help somewhat, week 28 when I went on bedrest it got better, but never completely subsided. I neither gained nor lost through almost my first 2 trimesters, and then I gained like 35 pounds (much of it water says my OB/gyn) middle/end of my 2nd trimester until delivery.

I have been going to strength training classes 2x's per week for the last few months, I get in cardio a few times per week with decent stroller walks. Not breastfeeding or even pumping anymore. All I can think is that I was so deprived of food for so long because of the Hypremesis, now that I have my appetite back, maybe I'm eating more than I need to?

Or maybe my metabolism is all messed up and it has yet to regulate?

Just wanted to say that I'm having the same problem and I don't know the cause just yet. Will chime back in if I figure it out (awaiting blood test results; they took 12 viles of my blood; there has got to be a thyroid test in there)...

Catherine,
Well our dinner ran over and we got to the theater 20min too late, so we cashed in our tickets and went home/picked up Indy early. We will try to see it next weekend again.

How was the movie Elizabeth? We don't have to get into a big discussion about the contreversial aspects BTW. I was wondering if eating beforehand was the best plan though? I envy you the chance to get out! I sense DH and myself slipping into a bad pattern, we had a babysitter lined up for President's Day w/end and in the end did nothing. So we have yet to get out to celebrate- Anniversary, Christmas, DH's birthday and his grant submission.... not looking good for a life here[B)].

Catherine and Tara..
I can't wear the baby snugli due to my back problems[:(] And my upper arms are definitly getting less flabby from lugging the baby everywhere. We aren't using the typical infant car seat, we're using a convertible style(infant-toddler type). Because there is no way I can lift one of those infant seats with the baby in it[;)] My back can't handle it. I do have free weights already at home that I will use while walking on the treadmill[:)]

Well, I have to go take a shower and get ready for our evening out for the first time[:)] We have a sitter for Indy and we are going out to a nice dinner with friends in downtown seattle and then out to see "The Passion" I am really looking forward to seeing that movie[:)]

Tara's suggestion is a good one, provided it's not a super fast treadmill. I find that Chloe gets a really good nap when I'm running around Target with her in the sling! I love my post-partum biceps too. All that lifting of the car seat does wonders. Not to mention that the resistance grows steadily with the baby [:)]. Seriously, DH has mentioned in the past that my upper arms lose their tone once the kid goes into the forward facing seat LOL!

For extra weight-bearing, you could do the treadmill with little Indy in a baby sling!

Kim,
oh thank god, nice to know someone else went through the same thing[:)]. I can't remember but is atenolol a beta blocker? I think I am going to ask to go back to the cardiologist. We found out that my brother had a massive stroke at 35(2yrs ago). I have one other brother who also had a massive stroke at 35(6yrs ago). I am only going on 28 next month but I have had some serious damage done to my arteries(notching). I don't want to be on a BP med that would slow my metabolism anymore. I was also thinking the same thing about the hyperemesis slowing my metabolism way down and then I was able to eat again(even though healthy amounts)after Indy came. I think my body is storing all of its fat.[:p] You know, I never had a full ECG taken, I had those monitors they gave me to try and catch my arrythmia but I got irritated with the machines and just returned them and never followed up with the cardiologist about it. It would be nice to know if I have had a TIA or something in the past. I have had many episodes of heart attack symptoms but passed them all off because I just feel to young to have these issues already.

I have been setting up all of my f/u appts for all the different specialties over the next few months. I feel like I should be 70yrs old. I'm seeing a new oncologist at the end of March,a back specialist for cortisone injections in my back, an endocrinologist for the thyroid, cardiologist for the heart, and now either a urologist or nephrologist because my kidney issues are all coming back again. I have no idea what we would do if we didn't have such great insurance[:D] I have this list of medical issues that I want solved or at least under better control, so I'm going at this all in a nice orderly fashion and hopefully by the end of the year I will be in much better shape.[:D] My goal for 2004 is to get very healthy and lose as much weight as possible within my healthy guidelines. I really would like to have another baby[:I] in the next 2-3 years I think, but can't do that until most of my medical issues are resolved or very well undercontrol[:)]

Elizabeth,

YES, I had the same problem. It was AWFUL.... I started pg at 156, dropped down to 130 because of the hg. At delivery, I weighed 170 (all fluid), when I left the hospital, I weighed 158. I was put on Lexapro and Labetalol right after delivery and two months later, I weighed 180. I was so disgusted with myself. After all the * I had been through, now I just felt icky. And, I was walking daily, eating right, no thyroid problem... About 5 months later, the labetalol quit working, and I was placed on another med. And, by my daughter's first birthday, I was FINALLY wearing my pre-pg clothes again. Now, at 15 mos pp, I am 10 pounds less than I was pre-pg and I haven't worked out (besides chasing Ainsley). I am 5'7", so I don't really want to lose any more weight, but the whole thing is so strange.
It could be just the effects of PPD. I really think it was for me. Plus, after 8 months of hyperemesis, my metabolism had to be completely messed up. I really think it took an entire year for my body to figure out what it was doing. (And, still have bp issues [}:)]).
Anyways.. Just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone and it is completely frustrating!! If your doc wants you on bp meds, you may want to look into something that doesn't slow the metabolism down further (like a beta blocker does).
Take care!!

yes, I had to give up caffeine because of the high pulse. I was a quadshot mocha w/mint skim milk drinker before I was prego. Boy do I miss my mocha's, just too pricey now. I am going to work on dropping my choc.habit while on vacation and start all new when I come home. I have been doing great with the water drinking finally. I think I was rebelling after pg because I was drinking a gallon or more a day of water back then. I am down to just one glass of something else a day(juice, soda, or milk) and then around 10-12 big glasses of ice water. My dh has agreed to look into buying a treadmill for me[:D] That is the only thing I use at the gym anyways. Might as well just own one ourselves than give away all that money to the gym. Not to mention I can make a million excuses not to go there[:D] If I have the treadmill here I can just hop on for a half hour a couple times a day while Indy is sleeping.

Gotta run...baby fussing...[:D]
