H1N1 vaccine question

Postby alexa5 » Tue Dec 15, 2009 09:36 am

This is not at all a flu vaccine debate, I promise! What I am needing feedback on is this: Nicholas (11 mos old) has already had his seasonal flu vaccine. We most likely would have gotten the H1N1 vaccine if his doctor's office would have had the preservative free version for his age, as that is what they usually give infants and young children--but they didn't have it.

My dilemma is that it looks like the health dept does have the correct one, but I kind of don't want to bother if supply could be an issue when it comes time to get the second shot (the booster). Plus it seems like the big wave of H1N1 has gone by, though I realize it is possible for it to resurface.

Thoughts from some others that are considering or have already had their children get the vaccine?

One dose is better than no doses, so they've been saying in the media and in different parts of the world. Our DD had her first one and is due for her second. We weren't offered a preservative free one, and knew there were, in general, shortages where we live, so we took it.

Good luck!

Did she do well with the shot? Nicholas seemed to do fine with the seasonal flu vaccine, so my guess is that he would with H1N1 as well since it is made similarly.

Jack had both the seasonal and H1N1.. only the first doses due to supply issues.. he did fine with both. He is 8 months old. In fact he didn't even cry. :)

We have had quite a bit of coverage where I live about H1N1 and it still being around strong. I know that in some places they are saying that kiddos don't need the second shot, that the first one is just fine. Where I am they just opened it up to everyone, so my kids got their boosters and I was able to get it.

Good luck with you decision.

I had an issue finding the first dose for Bennett, but the second one was no problem. It seems that the vaccine is very accessible now. I even had one last week and I'm not in a high risk group.

Ali has had both seasonal shots & both H1N1 now & did well with all. We got the H1N1 from the Health Dept & when we went for boosters they were giving it to everyone. I honestly don't know if it was preservative free.

They are worried about a potential third wave of H1N1, for what that's worth...

Our DD did just fine with the H1N1. It was no different than the seasonal.

Michael did get the seasonal flu shot (both doses) and he got dose 1 of H1N1. Our drs are saying that the wave hasn't hit yet here yet.
