In other words, maybe our non-specific proteinuria (it's not just, say, albuminuria, but general proteinuria) is actually podocyturia. Which means that what we're *actually* spilling are the cells that line the blood vessels in the kidneys. Preeclampsia mucks up the kidneys generally -- we develop holes in the glomeruli -- so this makes a certain amount of sense, and it also might help explain the fraction of women who have permanent kidney damage postpartum, if the blood vessels were damaged beyond repair.
