Placental antiangiogenic factors are upregulated and disrupt the maternal endothelium. This change in the normal angiogenic balance toward an antiangiogenic state can result in hypertension, proteinuria, glomerular endotheliosis, HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets) syndrome, and cerebral edema-the clinical signs of preeclampsia and eclampsia. The regulation of these antiangiogenic factors in the placenta is unknown.
Just a review paper that says what essentially everyone's saying: now that we know it's caused by the placenta and roughly which molecules to look at, we have a research agenda that might give us tests and interventions in the long run, but at the moment, we are still trying to figure this out because it is evo-devo and extremely hard. On that note, this video tries to explain some of this and makes me giggle.
