During my entire first pregnancy, I vomited almost constantly - even during deliver. I delivered at 36 weeks and only gained a total of 7 pounds with my pregnancy. My daughter weighed jsut 5 pounds, but we were blessed with a healthy baby. Everyone tells you that each pregnancy is different. I was horribly ill with my next two pregnancies - both ended at 12 weeks in miscarraige. With my fourth pregnancy, I actually started getting sick prior to even knowing that I was pregnant. I thought I had a stomach flu - HA! It was a struggle for me to keep anything at all down. Within a few weeks after finding out that I was pregnant, I started researching "morning sickness". What I found was a syndrome called hyperemesis. I had never heard of it, but as I read about it, I became convinced that I had suffered from HG with each pregnancy. I talked with my Dr. about it and got little information, or relief from my constant sickness. I then found an article on taking Vitamin B6 and Unisom (yes, the night time sleep aid). Unisom contains a medicine that was used and banned in the US for morning sickness. The drug is still widely used in Canada. The reason for the ban in the US related to red tape and US drug regulations. I questioned my doctor about using the Unisom and B6 and she told me that it was perfectly safe. (American Baby May 2004 issue has an article on the use of Unisom) Obviously I just took it before bedtime because Unisom is a sleep aid. I do think that it helped me to an extent. I could actually get through a day without vomiting, however, I still felt terrible on a daily basis. My fourth (and last) pregnancy ended on 8/29/04 while in my 5th month when I was hit with PE/HELLP, I had only gained a total of 3 pounds by my 20th week. My doctor told me that I was the worst case of PE/HELLP that she had ever seen. I was lifeflighted from my home town to a woman's hospital in Pittsbugh. In just a few short hours my brain was swelling, my liver and kidneys had shutdown, my blood pressure was in the 200's and my blood platlets were dangerously low. As we all know, there is only one 'cure' for PE/HELLP and that is delivery. At 20 weeks, my little guy was too small to survive. I spent a week in the hospital recovering. I am not sure what if any relationship hyperemesis has to PE/HELLP, but I beg any woman who is constantly sick during her pregnancy to stay on her doctor until she gets some relief.
