The pre-conception appt. was great for me. Honestly - the MFM didn't tell me anything I didn't already know - but she told what meds to take and it made me feel so much better that a game plan was in place for a future pregnancy. When I got pregnant again I didn't have to worry about what to do next - I already had a plan.

My issue is underlying BP issues as well.

It also was very comforting to not have her tell me NOT to try again. I didn't think she would, but just hearing her say she thought we could get a healthy baby made me so much more hopeful than I thought I ever would be.

Hi Katey, I just did a search and came up with this thread about PE resources in Ireland:

I hope it helps, good luck talking with your doctor!

It is funny this resurfaced because I just happened to come back in and take a peek at it. Glad to hear from more people--thanks! In all honesty I have major doubts that I want another child (not so much due to the pregnancy aspect--more about not sure if I can handle more than one!), but I have decided to look into a preconception appt. The thought occurred to me that sometimes pregnancies happen even when you don't plan them, and if that were to happen, I would like to have done this ahead of time and be aware of my situation as a whole/know what I am getting myself into.

Just as a general guess my OB had said that he felt I was at high risk for pre-e again due to my bp levels during pre-e/family history, and that I would be older the next time around. I think he is probably right, but it can't hurt to know if there is something more specific that could be causing the problems.

I didn't get a preconception appt until a couple of years later. I also didn't have any underlying disorders, except the blood pressure being an issue.
One reason I did it is because I wanted to find an mfm to get on board with, because the obgyn practice I saw really seemed clueless as to what I was going through and I wanted to have someone in place the next time, just in case I needed them for the extra care. It wasn't as much to have someone tell me what went wrong, the percentages. I had already decided I would try and get pregnant again and it wasn't going to matter what the mfm said to change that. It would matter though what I thought of this person. There are several mfms in my area so I wanted the chance to make sure I liked the person.

I think it is important to have a mfm on board if someone has had PE before.

p.s. sorry I didn't realize this was an older thread!

Katey, good luck with your testing, I think it is a good idea to find out if you have any underlying disorders.

Katey,
Preeclampsia is still considered a disorder of first pregnancies. With your late onset and bounce back to normal, you may fit that scenario. Because having had preeclampsia once puts you at risk your doctor has given you a 20% chance of reoccurence, which is pretty low. Good luck with your testing.

Hi Katey, here is a recent thread with questions others have put together, viewtopic.php?t=36084 , and I think there are additional threads in this topic. Your pregnancy sounds similar to mine (31 year old normal weight, healthy, got PE and had DS at 36 weeks), and I was told by my old OB that there was nothing I could do to prevent PE again. I recently went in to see a MFM, however, asked some of the questions I found on this board, was tested for blood clotting disorders, and ended up testing positive for one (protein C deficiency). I am now on baby aspirin once a day, and my new OB said that I will be put on lovenox when I get pregnant again. Definitely search through the boards here, others have posted a lot of helpful information!

Edit, here is another thread:
viewtopic.php?t=3910&SearchTerms=list
And I should have said, I would try a second opinion with another doctor or ask for a referral to a specialist if you aren't getting the communication you need from your OB. Switching made a huge difference for me!

I@m in ireland and i dont think anyone does pre conception apts if they have had PE unless it is very severe. I had DD at 37 wks, induced due to getting PE at 36 weeks. My BP was up for a week or two after the birth but then OK. I asked by OB about whether i would get it next time and he said i only have a 20% chance of getting it again. But i have no idea why i got it in the first place. I was a healthy 31 year old with no underlying issues at all, healthy and a normal weight. What tests should i ask for if i want to see if everything is oK now? DD is now 16 months. K

I think it is valuable to add that not all pre-conception appointments are equal. Even MFM we work with will vary in what tests they order and what they consider irrelevant. A pre-conception appointment won't replace your own education but can help you get a better picture.

In the interest of full disclosure, I had my four without any pre-conceptual appointments and several months after the birth of baby #4, I learned that I have Stage 3 Sarcoidosis, but it wasn't until several years later that the specialists acknowledged that sarcoidosis was likely my pre-existing condition and why I'd had such severe preeclampsia.

That being said--I don't know that I would have had all four had I had that information--so not to throw a wrench into the works here but bad news doesn't always mean you can't have a safe pregnancy and good news doesn't always mean that nothing is wrong...so while I support the recommendation of a pre-consult, not all pre-consults are the same, they don't predict everything, and they are no replacement for your own education and vigilance.

:) Best wishes!
