How to ovulation after delivery?

I am wondering what your experiences are with how long it took to ovulate post-delivery. Before conceiving Amelia, I charted for about 9 months and had an extremely regular, predictable cycle. Now, I'm 11 weeks postpartum and I don't think I'm ovulating at all. My basal temps are lower than they've ever been (low 96s), and I don't get the mid-month temp surge. I'm sure things will return to normal, but how long???

Hi DJA,
How are you feeling? It's all been so recent for you.

I had regular cycles until age 18. They were so heavy that I went on the pill at that time, and that really helped. Stayed on the pill until age 31, so I'm assuming they were regular before pregnancy.

4 months postpartum, while I was still pumping (bfeeding never worked out), I got my period, so I'm assuming I ovulated about 3 1/2 months postpartum, while lactating.

I went back on the pill from approx. November '03 to February 03. Then I didn't have a period for about 3 months. Now this most recent past cycle, I ovulated on day 24 (have been charting since March).

So! There's a long-winded answer to your question.

I'm not sure what's considered normal (i.e., how long you should wait before you see a doctor), but my OB told me 4 or 5 months wasn't unusual at all.

Stress can play a major part on "Oing".... It usually takes our bodies at least 3 to 4 months to get back on track after a birth now, with adding stress it could take longer. It took my body a good 6 months to get back in to a normal pattern.

I think I am finally my O'ing last 2 cycles since my daughter's birth in the beginning of January. It took 2 months for my period to come and the first cycle was weird. So for me it took at least 3 to 4 months to get a normal cycle. I am waiting a couple more to begin trying again.

Sounds like we are not abnormal at least. We are just getting to the point of being ready on the TTC front - the doctor seemed to think it was not unreasonable to begin at 3-4 months postpartum if we are comfortable with it. Age is a factor for me, so I don't want to wait too long to start trying. Hopefully things will get back on track soon!!
