Cara,

This happened to me as well, and I was very disappointed. I kept looking though and this is what I came up with and it might work for you as well:
- I went to a peri outside of the network (and state for that matter) and I paid the cost of that; I guess you can talk to the peri and explain your situation and maybe agree on a lower cost for you.
- I found an internist specializing in obstetrics, and saw him for a preconception consultation.
- I also found a vrey good nephrologist and saw her for my chronic HBP and protein.

Depending on the problems you had while you had pree and whatever problems you currently still have (HBP, protein), try to find a specialist in that area and be followed up by them. It will come in handy to know someone if the same problems arise during pregnancy. A new patient might wait 3 months or more for an appointment to a good specialist, but if you are an established patient and an emergency comes up they will see you right away.

Good luck!

Julie I wish there was! The group of 4 are the only specialists in the area and apparently serve most of the state. In New Orleans, there are more but it is outside of my insurance coverage area so it would only cover like 30% of the bill. I guess since my OB said there would only be about a 10% chance of me getting sick again, I'l take my chances and TTC. If I do end up with PIH again, I'll definitely be in to see the peri again.

Cara,

How frustrating... I didn't have this problem, in fact I met with three different peris for preconception appts. before we decided on one. Is there another dr./office that you can check out?

Hi Cara, if I can try to remember the details, I had a similar problem. Gosh, actually I can't remember if I was pregnant or not, but I had a pre-conception/just-conception appointment with the peri - then was suddenly told that I'd have to pay for that appointment because I wasn't experiencing preeclampsia at the time of the appointment. The insurance didn't want to let me see the 'specialist' until I started to have symptoms of PE (even tho' my OB had OK'ed the idea). I think eventually the peri literally made something up so that the insurance would let me see him.

How did I even get the appointment scheduled in the 1st place - I think I just called the peri directly (he was on the list of providers) and just made an appointment - bypassing the OB - then fought the insurance later. I did this with ignorance of the insurance 'rules'. My second pregnancy was an insurance nightmare the whole way through...due to using preventative measures rather than waiting for all *#$ to break loose before acting.

rude awakening

Postby cara » Tue May 03, 2005 11:10 am

I called today to get a preconception appt with a maternal fetal specialist and was told that they would not see me unless I was pregnant and had a reason to see a specialist. Have any of you ever heard of this? I read that so many people on here went for their pre conception appts with the high risk folks. I even called my OB and he said there was no way to get me in to speak with anyone. I just wanted to see if anyone else has this issue.

Thanks
