Hi! Mine remained elevated for about 5-6mo and my GI was having my labs drawn every 2 weeks because he just couldn't figure out what was keeping them elevated. He did an ultrasound twice and a CT scan once and then only thing he saw was that 4 days after I delivered (which is when the pp pre-e started) my liver was a little swollen but returned to normal by the time I was referred to him. He told me I was his first patient in his 20+ years practicing that presented to him with liver issues due to postpartum preeclampsia, he told me it's a very rare condition and usually resolves within the window you are treated by your OB. He apologized for not being able to give me an answer because he truly did not have one, he only had theories. But he told me he was going to monitor my liver until I was 6mo pp and then he would biopsy me, luckily it resolved itself.

My enzymes went up and down, down, then up and up, slightly down and then up again and they plateaued for a little bit and went down slightly until one day they were all within range and have been since. So there is really no way in knowing, I've spoken to some women who had elevated enzymes for up to 1yr postpartum.

I hope you feel better!

Hi there,

I wish there was a precise answer for this, but unfortunately, it varies according to each patient and their unique biochemistry! Generally, most enyzmes begin dropping 6-8 weeks postpartum, and the majority of patients return to normal after 12 months. That being said, it can be difficult to regain balance, because preeclampsia can sometimes "unmask" underlying issues that continue to manifest after the postpartum period. Have you talked with your general care provider or ob about your concerns? Sounds like they are monitoring you carefully, and you should ask them to talk to you about why they think your numbers may be rising again.

And keep in touch; let us know how you are doing!

How long will enzymes stay elevated?

Hi. I recently had a c-section to deliver my son as soon as my doctor figured out that I had hellp syndrome. My son was born six weeks ago and all of my numbers seemed to be normalizing even up to three weeks ago. When I went back for my six weeks check-up today my enzymes are elevated higher than they were three weeks ago. How long was it before other mom's enzyme levels were completely back to normal? I'm really stressed out and scared about my enzyme levels increasing again! I would really feel better if I heard of others that this may have happened to and how long it took for you to get better.
