I can't really answer this topic but wanted to say thank you to everyone for sharing your stories. I had HELLP, Pre E, and pulmonary edema at 25 weeks with my first pregnancy. My bp was 200/120 and I had 4+ protein in my urine. I had emergency c section same day as diagnosis and Emily was 1lb 1oz. She spent 4 months in the NICU but she is 14 months and doing great now!

Just got a positive preg test on Friday freakin out! They did find an underlying cause though, I have a blood clotting disorder so I will have to be on LDA and I believe lovenox as well, so I am right there with ya, Alley. Hoping everything goes very well for you, keep us posted!

I have HELLP with my first child who passed away. I did not get HELLP with my pregnancy last year.

1. How was the pregnancy this time? I went on bedrest at 26 wks due to bp issues and IUGR, c/s at 32 weeks due to bp and IUGR.
2. Did you develop hellp again? I did not.
3. did you go full term with the baby? No, Michael arrived at 32 weeks.
4. Did you do anything different this time? I was monitored really close but didn't keep me from having high bp or IUGR>
5. How was the baby before and after birth? Michael was very small at 2lbs 10 oz, spent 6 weeks in NICU..today at 11 mos...PERFECT..just small :)

Well, they flied me out to Vancouver last night and I would be getting the c-cection this morning. Had to start steroids right away (yesterday) and baby would be around 4lbs @ 34 weeks.

1. How was the pregnancy this time?
2nd not bad just HBP
3rd as you can see HELLP @ 34 weeks c-section
2. Did you develop hellp again?
YES
3. did you go full term with the baby?
NO
4. Did you do anything different this time?
NO
5. How was the baby before and after birth?
Everything seemed to be fine up to around 30weeks when I got gestational Diabetes, bad...bad swelling and then the abdominal pain started and the platlets started dropping fast. For after birth I can not say, getting the c-section this morning....just going to be small, that is all I know for now.

First preganacy- HELLP started 34 wks, delivered 36 wks, 5lb, 13 oz boy. He has had "reactive airway disease" diagnosed by 12 months, he also had severe GERD with aspiration of vomit and experienced one episode of non-breathing. He had a lot of problems with breast-feeding as well.

1. How was the pregnancy this time?
Second Pregnancy (I got pregnant 14 months after the first child was born)- another boy, worked out daily until about 32 weeks, felt good, gained more weight than the first time, no HELLP or other complications.
Third Pregnancy (I got pregnant 9 months after the 2nd child was born, while on the minipill AND breastfeeding - um, surprise!)- no problems except exhaustion from chasing 2 little boys!
2. Did you develop hellp again?
2nd- Nope
3rd- Nope
3. did you go full term with the baby?
2nd- 41 wks, 2 days- c-section after failed vbac
3rd- 39 weeks (scheduled Csection)
4. Did you do anything different this time?
I was a total pain in the *ss to my doctors, checked my own lab results and charts and insisted on more extensive bloodwork that the standard stuff and they docs complied. I was an advocate for myself and my baby. All three pregnancies, I ate well and excersized and did not gain more than the recommended lbs, so nothing changed from my habits.
5. How was the baby before and after birth?
2nd- Mr. Mellow- so easy. However, at 9 months, he was diagnosed with Autoimmune Neutropenia and is still followed by a hematologist. He also has gross motor dyspraxia, hypotonia and a speech delay.
3rd- Miss Pink (geez, I hated the color pink before I had her). She's perfect. She's now 1 1/2 and fiesty, talking, bossing around her big brothers and great.
There's HOPE AFTER HELLP!!!

I had HELLP with my 1ste pregnancy (emergency c-section @ 35 weeks...severe abdominal pain). 16 Months later I was pregnant again, everything went well except for HB but no HELLP. Now (2.5 years later) I am pregnant again....33 weeks and the abdominal pain is stating again (also HBP, and crazy swelling).....platelates starting to drop and confirmed HELLP....again....nights are long, but I will have an answer tomorrow on what they are going to do....take the baby out or wait....will keep you up to date.

I had class I HELLP with my first pregnancy causing me to deliver my son at 32 weeks. I had platelet levels of 27,000 - normal is 140,000- 440,00 and had to have plasma transfusions for 4 days. My doctor said it was the worst case of HELLP she had ever seen. However 2 weeks ago I just delivered my second son at 38 weeks 4 days weighing 10 lbs 5 oz. with no signs of symptoms of HELLP or PE at all. The only thing that I did diffrently the second time around was I ate very healthy through out the pregnancy and tried to stay stress free as I was under ALOT of stress when I was pregnant with my first son. The second pregnancy was completely diffrent in every aspect then the first. The other thing I did was even before I started trying for our second child I started taking supplements of Vit E, calcium, magnesium, Vit D and Vit C as well as a prenatal vitamin. I continued all of those through out my pregnancy. I also must tell you that I was tested for many of the underlying diseases that doctors feel contribute to HELLP and was negative for all. I wish you all the luck in the world and hopefully you can have a wonderful and HELLP free second pregnancy.

i had a second baby after class 1 HELLP, spent days in ICU and 2 weeks in hospital altogether.i was given extreme high risk status, so i had a pre pregnancy consult which helped in my decision to go for it again! also i had alot of post traumatic therapy to get my head around what had happened to me and my poor son. i think it is just as important to have a healthy mind aswell as a healthy body again after such a hard time.
i am so sorry you have had to endure HELLP, but glad to see you have all your babies with you.

i found i was pregnant again 2 years ago and was put onto low molecular weight heparin for the entire pregnancy (from 4wks and 2 days pregnant up to 2 days before elective c section), baby aspirin, i also had to have insulin in this pregnancy due to GD. No HELLP this time, it was such a different experience with joe than with jake, i delivered by c section at 37 wks due to big baby becasue of the GD. Joe had no problems except very low blood sugar for 5 days after the birth due to my GD. bringing him home was one the happiest days of my life.

good luck with whatever you decide, best wishes to you and your brood

Yes I have a second child after my first child with HELLP. I got HELLP with my first child at 40 weeks. No symptom, no pain, just very tired and extremely high blood pressure at 40th week.
1. Pregnancy progressed normal, like the first time.
2. No Hellp second time
3. This time, the doc didn't want to take a chance and wait until 40 weeks so I have a scheduled c at 38 weeks
4. A specialist monitored me the whole time, with extra tests and some other ultrasound (not 2 or 3 for a normal pregnancy). One of the tests he did was to measure the blood flow through the placenta (I think that was the test?)
5. Not sure which baby you refered to ? Both babies were healthy before and after birth.
I didn't not take any extra calcium or raspberry tea or aspirin.
Interestingly after baby #1 we had to see a fertility doc for baby #2. The fertility doc diagnosed me with PCOS. He firmly believed that PCOS/insulin resistance and HELLP are related.

2. Did you develop hellp again? No
3. did you go full term with the baby? No she was 6 weeks early
4. Did you do anything different this time? went to the once a week from the start and then twice a week towards the end.
