Laney- thanks for the reply. Sorry for your loss as well. I do agree that no one should suffer the loss of a child at any age.
My 24 h urine came back normal as did all my blood work looking for potential thrombotic disorders so that is good. We go again Monday to talk with specialist.
If you have the capacity, I would love to look at the full text article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25582098 by van oostwaard et al. It's only a summary and I cant get the full text. Looks like a large meta-analysis.
Thanks again- Sara

Hey Sara,

Sorry to hear what you've been through. I am an obsessive research-science kind of person myself, so I can sympathize!! I had an early pregnancy loss (unrelated to PE) and just spent a ton of time understanding what happened. It's something that should happen to no parent.

The good news is, that it's not a guarantee you'd get PE/HELLP again, but unfortunately if you do have this history, especially with your last experience being so early, it's much more likely. But you are doing a good hting in learning more about potential underlying conditions.

Keep us informed on how you are doing and if you want any research articles specifically, let Caryn and I know! (We love this stuff.)

Caryn- thanks for the reply.
There was no genetic work up on the placenta. I will check some of Catherine's posts. I've been reading to the point of obsession studies and articles to reassure myself that I'm not crazy and not being reckless for wanting to proceed with another pregnancy. My husband is worried about if hellp recurs again that I might not make it through this time, it was rather scary for he and my family. I developed a few hypotensive episodes after all the mag, labetolol and some platelets where I appear very ill and was kinda out of it. I never lost conciousness though. The rapidness being the most scary part. I'm at work in the morning and by supper time I'm getting platelets and transferred to icu because of hemodynamic instability and delivering a baby right after midnight, with kidney damage.
Physically, now I feel great and my kidneys are good.
I'm a hospital pharmacist so I have the ability to get my hands on journal articles and have been checking those out. Seems like most of it is older info.
I'm currently taking lisiopril for my chronic Htn and ran across some posts about potential benefit of these kind of drugs ( ace inhibitors)Do you know anything about this?
It does appear that I might benefit from LDA in a future pregnancy. I have heard yet about the APA blood test. They also collected a 24 h urine to see if I had protein in my urine baseline.
Thanks again- I've been reading on the forums for the past 9 months before posting.... You seem to have a wealth of knowledge, so thanks for sharing.

Hi Sara, and welcome. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your little one. This syndrome is so brutal and so, so fast-moving.

I've pinged a few people who did have HELLP after normal pregnancies - I can tell you that in general, subsequent pregnancies are usually pretty uneventful, but that you would be closely monitored in case you went on to develop preeclampsia or any other pregnancy weirdness, simply because you have demonstrated a tendency towards this particular biological response. One poster to search on would be "Catherine" - she had normal first and third pregnancies, with Class I HELLP in the second one. For the first and third, she had the baby exactly one day earlier than she had the second; maybe that middle placenta had the genes to hang in there a day longer than her body was willing to tolerate.

Did they do any genetic workup of the placenta? Trisomy (even just in one placental lobe) is associated with early HELLP, and you jogged my memory for that.

HELLP in 3rd pregnancy?

Postby sara1beatles » Fri Apr 17, 2015 06:29 pm

Hello all- I'm currently 34 and have 2 living children 7 and 4, and one angel stillborn at 24 weeks. That happened about 9 months ago. I have chronic hypertension but had no troubles with my first 2 pregnancies. With my third, developed hellp suddenly at 24 weeks, class 2, placental abruption, slight acute kidney injury but have recovered and feel good now.
I'm looking for anyone with normal first or second pregnancies then hellp and if you went on to have more children, how did it go?
I really want more children but also have a husband and 2 beautiful children to think about.
I just saw a high risk and they are testing for antiphospholipid antibodies. If that is negative he quoted about 25 percent chance or preeclampsia recurrence chance but couldn't give me any guidance as to the severity( mild preeclampsia vs eclampsia/ hellp), which is obviously a huge range. Any thoughts /suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Sara
