Here is an e-mail from Eleni regarding "talking points" when communicating with the media:

From Eleni:

I'd recommend you reinforce the points made in the press release and then really drive home

(1) the necessity for *awareness* -- that so much can go wrong simply because women and sometimes their health care providers - are not aware of the signs and symptoms of PE. Beyond that, HCPs then need to be aware of appropriate and timely diagnosis and management of the disease.

(2) the necessity to *raise money* for research, awareness campaigns and adequte education for health care providers.

Each year, 200,000 women in the U.S. get PE. That's almost one in every twelve pregnancies. We're excited about the enthusiasm across the country for the Walk-A-Thon and hope that it begins to underscore the widespread impact of the disease.

Thank you, Eleni.

I knew a lot of the "points," but you know, my husband was the one who remembered the 1 in twelve. He is awesome!!![:p]

I contacted Linda Hurtado at ABC 28 in Tampa about covering pre-e and HELLP stories on her nightly news health segment. Her response was positive but coverage was pending supervisory approval.

I was hospitalized from Feb. 13-19 for a ruptured ovarian cyst (bled into the ovary, required surgery and 6 pints of blood, not a lot of fun) and my OB/GYN surgeon from St. Pete, happened to be a specialist in HELLP and pre-e (both of which I had during my 2001 pregnancy); I mentioned the Walk-a-thon to his staff and they seem interested in participation and sponsorship. Email at for details or information you can give me to share with them.

Lindy, it is so good to see you around again! You should start a new thread and tell us how you and that beautiful baby are doing!

Melissa or I will be in contact with you today about the FL WAT and materials. Someone else in our FL membership has also received a soft promise from Linda Hurtado at ABC about a WAT segment. That's great that your OB is interested. We'll be in touch later today.

Well our newspaper that reaches all over Dodge County (the county I live in) just called to make an appointment for Monday April 4 to talk about the walk, I will know then if they are going to write a story about it or my experience with preeclampsia or what. I am so excited! I will let everyone know how it went and what they had to say on Monday. Wish me luck. Also if there is any other points besides what is already posted here that I should make sure to cover please let me know.

Just adding that the Pottsgrove, PA walk has been listed on the popular Reading radio station Y102 WRFY's website calendar and might be announced on air as well.

Because our walk is on school grounds the District will also advertise the walk and PF information.

Complete information regarding the walk and PF was included in this month's edition of the St. James Lutheran Church of Pottstown's newsletter. They are our leading sponsor as they donated $500 to the walk. And that newletter mailing list is well over 800 people. I will also be doing a talk at two worship services on Mother's Day to promote awareness to those in attendance. (note: our walk is on the 14th)

Finally, I am working to get the local newspaper to print the press release and an ad...this looks promising, but has not yet been confirmed.

Eleni, I will gather a hard copy of all that I am able...

I got a mention in our local community section of the paper. They even posted a photo of Ariana and I. I had my email listed so people could contact me if they wanted info on the walk or PE.

I just got a call from someone at the Atlanta Journal & Constitution. She's getting the walk in their entertainment publication, Access Atlanta, hopefully April 28.
