I received an email today from one of our docs. I wanted to share it with you because it gave me goosebumps.
We had a woman transferred in from another hospital today:
12 weeks 100/60
20 weeks 100/60
24 weeks 130/80 1+ protein had gained 10 pounds
On the day after this visit she noticed she began swelling. After a
few days she called the office and spoke with the nurse who was
reassuring. After a few more days she began exploring the web - benign baby sites first - not much help.
She found "that preeclampsia.org" and began reading about the disease. She was "reading about herself." She went to the drugstore and took her BP...170/110 - 4+ protein. She called her MD and was seen right away (even though her next appointment wasn't supposed to be for 10 days). "I became my pushy self," she said.
Her doctor called us immediately and told her, "You MUST go to the U."
Her BP was 160/110, pulmonary edema, 4+ protein, mildly elevated SGOT. Doing better after atenolol, hydralazine, lasix (3 liters of diuresis). In 10 days both mom and baby would have been on the edge.
She did not realize the the Foundation was local and that she had fallen into a nest of zealots.
The Foundation and the website are clearly making a difference. I know that sometimes it is hard to appreciate it through all of the work, but it is.
