I had horrible back pain and I felt like someone had driven a knife into the area under my right ribcage. Classic, but I thought I was just being a wimp. NO wierd pain during pregnancy should be ignored as being weak or wimpy.

If anyone is still reading this, here is my story. I didn't have symptoms, other than very bad swelling until after my baby was born. A few days after coming home from the hospital, I had a blood pressure headache that made me think I was having an aneurism and dying. I've never hurt that bad before. But all along I had hurt very bad in my shoulder. Apparently, that's where my pain radiated. Fortuately, it didn't get bad enough to incapacitate me, but it wouldn't let up and it was pretty bad. It wasn't until I found this website recently, that I found out that's what was causing my pain when I had HELLP.

I recently had to give birth due to the HELLP Syndrome. I woke up one morning and had pain in my right shoulder and neck. I thought it was because I slept wrong or just pulled a muscle. For approx. five days I was in terrible pain sleeping was not happening. I was able to use a heating pad and it would take some of the pain away and I could sleep for a while. On July 11, right after the pain was starting to subside, I started having some pain in my stomach. I thought it was due to my stomach stretching. I was at 26 1/2 weeks. I placed a pillow under my stomach and went to sleep. My boyfriend had to wake up early that morning at 5:30am so I woke up with him. I still had some pain, but it wasnt too bad. I then began to get sick. I started burping and then had to run to the bathroom to throwup. I dry heived while I was throwing up and after I had this terrible throbbing pain which I thought was from dry heiving. I tried several things, but it did not work. The pain was in my upper abdominal and it was a weird feeling. It just was thrubbing in that area. I went to my doctor and he checked my pressure and my protein in my urine. My pressure was good and I had some protein to which they said is normal. He advised that it was prob. my gallbladder and sent me home with medication. I went home and got some sleep. The doctor told me to eat no fat and take the medication. I of course didn't listen and went and got breakfast from mcdonalds. I figured the nexium would work. During sleeping I was awaken with terrible pain and contacted my doctor. Of coursed he fussed at me for what I ate and told me to go to the hospital and get a pain drip for my gallbladder and they would perform some scans. I did what I was told and upon getting to the hospital they asked for a urine screen. Upon supplying the urine screen my urine was the color of coke. I then began to become extremely scared. I could see the nurses faces which scared me even more. Upon checking my pressure it was 191/99. My doctor was contacted immediately and I was sent to ******* I was told I would have to deliver and they did not give my son a chance to live. I had already been seeing specialist due to my baby not growing properly and he at 26 weeks he was only measuring at 21 weeks. I had a disease that caused blood clots in the placenta so I was taking lovenox once a day to which I had already taken. Once at **** I was suppose to go to emergency surgery to take my son, but due to the shot I was unable to and would have bled to death. The next day they continued to check my platlets which were declining. They had to wait 24 hrs for the lovenox to get out of my system to do surgery. I had taken the medication at approx. 2pm on July 12. On July 13 at approx. 2pm they took a platlet count and I was rushed to surgery. My last known platlet count that I could remember was 51. I begged them to keep me awake, but was told there was no way I would die. At that point they gave him a 5-10% chance of survival. I begged please let me see my son alive just once. I didn't care if I died my son was more important. Of course I was told no and rushed to surgery. My son Aiden Andrew Price was born at 15:56 and only weighing 11.5 ounces. I woke up in ICU to learn my son was still living. Words could not explain how I felt at that time. I was unable to go see him due to my condition. Pictures were brought to me and he appeared to be a perfect angel. On July 14 I was moved out of ICU and was able to go see him. He was the most perfect angel. He was moving and everything seemed to be fine. I was able to touch him. We stayed with Aiden as long as we could. I got out of the hospital on the Friday. We made Frequent trips to the hospital and stayed with him many hours. For a week and a half Aiden did wonderful. One night he took and turn, but we expected it and took it with stride. He started coming back and everything was doing great. All of a sudden things got worse he kept losing oxygen and they had to bag him to get him back. On July 31, 2008 I lost the most important thing in my life. Aiden passed and life as I knew it ended. All I wanted was a child. Before being pregnant I was told I had PCOS which cause infertility. I had to take fertility drugs to have him. Aiden was the most important thing in my life. I quess God needed a perfect angel and he was chosen. I will never know, but please if you have any pain that you feel uncomfortable with go to the hospital. I don't know what would have happen to me if I wouldn't have went. Yes my child did die, but if you don't go you can die and your chances of your child surviving is worse. Thank you for reading my story sorry it is long, but I refuse to let Aiden fade away. To know him for the short time he was here was like heaven on earth. I thank God everyday for me surviving and giving me a chance to know my son for the short time he was on earth. To everyone that is pregnant on this site may God bless your pregnancy and keep you and your baby safe.

My pain was like Catherine and Anne. Sharp pain under my right breast/rib cage. My dr actually gave me benadryl to take for it. She thought it was the baby waking me up kicking me. It would wake me up out of a dead sleep. Getting on my hands and knees and panting seemed to help somewhat. I even went to the er and they put a monitor on me and everything. They didn't catch it either.

For me, it was the worst pain I have ever experienced. It was on the right side of my abdomen and sharp. I had given birth about 2 hours before it started and the nurse on duty assumed it was normal. She kept telling me to sit in the rocking chair and relax! I was doubled over in pain and was asking my husband if I was going to die. It turns out I came close. 90 percent of my liver was damaged and I ended up in intensive care for 3 days. With my second birth, the epidural did not work and the pain during labor was not as bad as that abdominal pain.

I had back pain, nausea and vomiting, and the worst headache of my life. I went to the hospital because I couldn't stand the pain.

Hi,

Mine was like a constant dull ache just under my ribs on right side. I just want to also mentipn that I had this ache for a month thinking it was my baby's feet stuck in my ribs. My BP was fine throughout this whole month...then once day it turned into agonising pai, I went to hospital and just went from pre-eclampsia to eclampsia then straight onto HELLP in about 4 hours. I was 33 weeks pregnant. Keep pushing your doctor as it can develop so quickly. x

I have had Hellp one time and Mild PreEclampsia once, and apparantly again according to labs that were dismissed as normal of course by an ignorant doctor.

My upper right pain was very mild but noticeable and felt like pressure sort of sharp but not too bad - what was worse for me was itchy legs. It felt as though my blood was itching, next day ended up in the hospital just feeling like I had the flu and delivered csection.

Good luck to all mothers on this forum!! If anyone has trouble with doctors maybe you should bring along a family member or friend to back you up.

Everyone talks about it being "the worst pain of your life". This really tricked me. I was in HELLP with full renal failure thinking my symptoms were normal pregnancy.

It feels like heartburn that makes you vomit. My back ached behind my right shoulder blade some. It was uncomfortable but I didn't think I was going to die. I actually thought -- morning sickness was worse so I must not have Hellp. I've been on runs that hurt worse than this, so I'm okay.

That was not the case and I almost died.

Heartburn with vomitting. If you can draw a smiley face in your thigh, something is wrong.

I had severe HELLP Synd and SEVERE chest pain. I thought it was heartburn. The pain was in my sternum and it hurt so much that I couldn't lie down and couldn't get a full breath of air into my lungs. I cried in pain and exhaustion because I couldn't sleep. I refused to go to ER at 3am because I felt it was heartburn. After taking half a bottle of Tums every hour and throwing up at 7am I decided to head to the ER for a prescription strength heartburn med, still believing nothing was wrong because the pain was in my chest and back, not my belly. I was in so much pain I could hardly walk. Breathing was horribly painful. My liver was enlarging, my platlett count dropped, my blood pressure skyrocketed, and I was blowing up like a balloon. I was taken by emergency C-Section 30 minutes later at 32 weeks. My son was 4lbs. 3oz. I tried to be strong and blow things off instead of listening to my body, it almost cost me my son's life. I was lucky. Don't ever dismiss something that you feel is terribly wrong. It's better to be safe than sorry. Even if it means waking up your husband or neighbor to take you to the ER.
