Protein S function

I have MTHFR homozygous and Protein S function. Does anyone else have this- the protein S function? I can't find much about it online. Any information would be helpful. I am on heparin twice a day.

My protein S was only slightly low during my last pregnancy, and my MFM said it could be due to changes in blood volume due to pregnancy (dilution basically). Especially since it was normal again postpartum.

I just found out yesterday that I have Protein S deficiency and that if I'm to get pregnant again (I lost my baby at 28 weeks in November 08 to HELLP), that I would need to be on heprin also. Until then, my peri said to take a baby asprin everyday. I'm only just starting to research it all but it seems like these clotting disorders are awfully common with people with HELLP.

I am sorry for your loss. Protein S def. seems to be very rare. I have never met anyone else with it. Even on the boards here there has not been much response on it. I did not go on to develop hellp in any of my pregnancies, although I had early onset severe pre eclampsia and PIH and mild pre eclampsia. I am now on Heparin while pregnant. I also have homo. MTHFR. I am now 23 wks with this, my third pregnancy. At this time my bps are good-sometimes great. I was diagnosed near the end of my 2nd pregnancy so this is my first pregnancy using heparin the entire pregnancy. I feel like it has made a difference so far.

I agree, it's super hard to find any information on Protein S. I'll keep looking for the both of us. I got the rest of my blood work back yesterday and I also have a Factor V. Leiden mutation and tested positive for anti-nuclear antibodies. Not good news. I guess no babies for me...

Have you seen a high risk specialist? (MFM or perinatologist.) They can counsel you on your risks in subsequent pregnancies. It is not impossible to have a PE/HELLP free pregnancy just because you have blood clotting disorders. This is my 3rd pregnancy and things are still going well, I am at 24 weeks and 3 days. It is also my first pregnancy on heparin- blood thinner, since 8 weeks. Also if your Dr.s are aware of your blood clotting disorders they will be able to treat you in a way that your body needs and give you and baby a better outcome.

i agree i also have protein s def and this is my first pregnany on the heprin shots have been on them since 14 weeks and im now 21 weeks so far its going good but i still woryy cause of the pre e as well

First of all, I'm so sorry for the loss of your baby! Absolutely heartbreaking, I know. . .

Second, have you met with a MFM since your pregnancy? I too have Protein S deficiency and MTHFR. I'm currently pregnant again - 34 weeks :) - and there is no sign of pre-e so far. Fwiw, my sister was also tested after my HELLP pregnancy since some clotting disorders are inherited - she, too, has Protein S deficienc. Her MFM encouraged her to get pregnant when she is ready but said that she will need to be on blood thinners too.

beth11, you and I have the same combination of blood clotting disorder, wow. Do you know if your MTHFR is heterozygous or homozygous?

This thread has lingered and is old but anyone else out there with recent info on protein s deficiency, please join in!

My 3rd pregnancy was the best yet. Judah was born at 37 weeks and was a whopping 7 pounds 3 oz. I developed pih at week 27 and was kept on high doses of labatalol and my ob let my bp's run high. I don't think this was good for me though. My blood pressure is just now beginning to return to pre-Judah numbers. He will be 3 in April.

I have known for years I had Factor V and MHTFR but I just found out yesterday I have Protien S deficiency yesterday. I have had 2 babys both early due to pre clampsia, and 2 mc. My DR has upped my lovenox to 80mg twice daily, Does anyone know if this helps?
