Headaches ***UPDATE***

Grrr...my seven year old has had headaches since he's been three. Well, now that he's started school (this is his first year doing a full day schedule), he's been having one once a week! I've talked with our pediatrician about these & he doesn't seem concerned (this was when there were more like once a month or so)...but now that they are once a week, I'm freaking out with fear (internally, of course).
I worry about everything now since PE & this isn't any exception!

***UPDATE*** 9/30/10 ***
OK, so we saw the neurologist today. On Saturday, we're going to the local children's hospital to do an MRI & lab work. On Monday, he'll be getting an EEG in her office.
Again, I'll update when I know even more...

We'll be seeing a pediatric neurologist at the end of the month...I'm freaking out a bit because I just had a good friend loose their little girl due to a brain tumor. Soooo...I hope to update soon with a good report!

Aww, Kelli! I had read your updates on FB but wasn't sure exactly what was going on. I'm so sorry to hear about all this. The first thing that popped into my head-has he had his eyes checked? I know that straining to see can cause headaches. This could be exasberated since he is now in school. Also, what about his teeth? Has he had a thorough dental x-ray? I only ask this because I had a friend who suffered from headaches and it ended up being TMJ causing them.

Keep your head up. I know it is tough but I will pray that everything works out okay. I know your fear since PE, I have it too. Stay strong!

Well, I'm glad they're checking it out quickly (although, I know it never seems fast enough when you're having to wait). I'll still be praying for y'all.

Kirsten has been getting migraines since she was little. When she was 7 we were referred to a pediatric neurologist. She has been on migraine meds since she was 7. When she gets one, she takes Maltax.

my nephew gets severe migranes too. He started getting them around 4 and they got worse over time. My sister had the range of tests run too just to make sure and he also went to a pediatric neurologist. Once he took medication, it was much better and now that he is 13, he gets them a lot less often.

Sorry to hear. I assume you have looked into this, but could it be that he might need glasses?

Just wanted to add a personal experience:

I had frequent headaches when I was younger. Began only occasionally, grew more frequent (once a month) then to once a week. I spent a lot of time in the nurses office... and had many grandparent trips to pick me up or drop off medicine.

In 6th grade it came to a head. I basically had a migraine that lasted for 6 months solid with no break. They ran every type of blood work possible, did every scan.I was sent to one of the best neurologists in the nation to no avail. Even sent me to a psychologist to see if I had school phobia ( I didn't, big shock). Couldn't find anything wrong. They finally concluded that the headaches were just my lot in life and the 6 month bout was onset with viral meningitis. They hospitalized me and gave me some strong meds for a week to break the headache cycle.

I still get headaches every now and then, but usually just once a month or so unless I am pregnant or sick. And now when I get one I take two tylenol with some caffeine (makes the meds work faster and better) and lay down for 30 minutes and they are gone. Most of my headaches are triggered by weather changes, or hormones, or sinus pressure and I rarely get the terrible migraines I used to.

Don't worry so much! It could be something bad, but it might just be normal, or something that will peak and then retreat. Have faith, and good luck!!! I am fine and hardly notice normal headaches now, but I am sure it freaked my mom out back in the day. :)
