protein in urine borderline

Hi,
I am 38 weeks pregnant with my 4th child. My first was a normal healthy pregnancy and delivery, my second I had a miscarriage and my third I had an emergency C-section and my daughter was not breathing when she came out, thankfully they resuscitated her and she has never had any health problems. At my doctor’s appointment this week I complained of some random vomiting I have all of a sudden been experiencing. This caused my doctor to have me get a blood test and urine test done. My blood test came back fine but they told me that I had protein in my urine that was borderline. Starting in the morning I have to do the 24hr urine test and go in for an appointment the following day. When I asked what protein in my urine meant the nurse wouldn't answer and just said I need more testing. Preeclampsia is the only thing I have been able to find that matches my symptoms. Reading what that could mean has made me a bit nervous. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me a bit more about the subject and maybe tell me what "borderline" means?

They said it was "borderline" on the regular urine check they have you do every time you go to an appointment? If so, probably what they were referring to was that they always check that for traces of protein spilling in your urine, and you might have been perhaps trace or +1. But those dips can be very inaccurate. The most reliable way to see if you are spilling protein, and to what extent is to collect 24 hours worth and then test it.

Great your doctor is being proactive and looking into it, at the same time if you're unsure about a lab, go ahead and give a call- that's what they get the big bucks for.

Thank you! I had done my normal urine test when I went in and they didn't say anything to me about it (like always) so I assumed it was normal. When I told her that I had been vomiting she had me go down to the lab and have blood taken and do another urine test but I have no idea how they would go about testing the one done in the lab. I guess I just have to go through the joy of the 24 hour test and go from there. My husband made a rule with the kids that they are not allowed to drink apple juice until Friday night

Welcome to the forums! The urine dip tests are not as accurate, so I am glad they have you do a 24-hour urine collection. I know it is not fun, but it is the only reliable way to determine your protein level. 300mg would be diagnostic for preeclampsia combined with an elevated BP of 140/90 at two separate readings (6 hours apart). Let us know when you get the results.
