New and confused

Postby ItsmeJD » Thu Jun 20, 2013 08:50 pm

Hi all I'm new here. I'm 32 weeks pregnant with my second baby and have been told I may have preeclampsia. I've been having headaches for the last couple of weeks but started having visual disturbances earlier this week so I gave my doctor a call and in the mean time I took my BP which was 118/91. She sent me for labs (blood work and a midstream urine sample) and made an appointment to see her the next day. The MA did the usual and took my vitals which she said were normal but I believe they were a bit high for me. I told her about my BP the previous day as well but she didn't seem concerned. Well my doctor came in and looked at my BP and labs together and said that my blood work looked great but my midstream showed elevated protein (I think it was .3 but she thinks it would be equivalent to a 300 in a 24 hour?) so she wanted to send me for a 24 hour urine collection and go from there. I did the collection and turned it in this morning so my doctor should be calling me back tomorrow morning and I've been monitoring my BP as well which has been around 120's/70's which is still a but high for my norm which is high 90's/60's. Has any one had elevated protein in a midstream sample but not the 24 hr? Or not been at or higher than 140/90 hike experiencing the same things as I have? Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome. Preeclampsia is diagnosed with 300mg or higher of protein in your urine in a 24-urine catch and two BP readings of 140/90 (or higher) six hours apart. Since your dip showed protein, your doctor had you do a 24-urine catch. Dipsticks are just not as accurate, but can give a good hint if something is off. Have you received the results of your 24 hour urine collection? It seems your doctor is doing the right things. Glad your labs are good.
Here are a list of typical PE/HELLP symptoms that may or may not present in no particular order. Please report any of these to your doctor. http://www.preeclampsia.org/health-info ... d-symptoms

Hi,

Sorry you're facing some complications. I'm glad to hear your doctor is being proactive- better to be on the safe side. The dips for protein in urine can be unreliable, so it's great that they are doing a 24 hour which will give you a reliable number. In regards to your BP, you only need one of the numbers to be elevated for it to cause some concern (either 140 or 90), so again, great your doctor is being proactive. I hope today's numbers are reassuring.

Please be sure to review the signs and symptoms- headaches and visual disturbances are some of them, and it was a great call to let your doc know about them. http://www.preeclampsia.org/health-info ... d-symptoms

I feel okay today. I feel like I'm seeing more visual disturbances but other than that about the same. I have been keeping track of my BP today and it seems like its continuing to rise. I haven't gotten my test results from my doctor yet but I did call her this morning and left a message. I was thinking if it were abnormal she would have called back by now but we will see. The highest my BP was today was 140/82 so it's all over the place.

How are you? There are quite a few of us who managed to get very sick without ever meeting the diagnostic criteria for high blood pressure. Mine only reached 135/80, but that is a big jump from 90/60. Please keep bugging your doctor if the visual disturbances continue. You can also just go in to L&D if you aren't comfortable and confident with your doctor's response.
I hope you are feeling better.

Hey all! I've been feeling okay recently but had to go to triage a week ago because of my blood pressure being elevated. It reached 172/92 and I got it to start going down but couldn't get below 140/90. They monitored baby and I and had me lay of my left side and my BP went back down to the lowest it had been in weeks. They did more blood work which came out good and sent me home. Since then my BP has still been up and down and I've still been having a few headaches and seeing visual disturbances quite a bit but my BP isn't high enough to require a trip to triage. I have no idea what's causing all of this because all of my labs come out just fine but I don't feel fine.

So I had a BPP ultrasound today and my doctor went over my most recent blood work which was done on the 27th but I guess the blood flow in the cord isn't what it should be so I will be seeing my perinatal specialist once a week to have baby measured, look at the blood flow in the cord, and also look at baby's growth. She seems pretty confident that I am on my way to pre e and they are just trying to monitor me very closely for now but so far my BP is looking good as well.

I am glad your doctors are diligent and are monitoring you well. No fun to wait for the shoe to drop. If I do the math right you are past 34 weeks? Fingers crossed that you can add a few more weeks.

Yes I'm so glad that they are keeping such good tabs on everything. I'm 35 weeks today so keeping my fingers crossed everything stays looking good for at least the next couple of weeks. She said if anything changes she wants to induce me at 37 weeks but I'm optimistic. I am a little concerned about the blood flow issue but I will ask more questions about that when I see the perinatal specialist this week.
