Reverse end diastolic flow-any experience?

Postby r8chele » Sat Jun 26, 2004 06:35 pm

I am posting in the hope that someone can offer advice or share their experience. I have a friend who is pregnant with twins. She was diagnosed with PE at 25 weeks and hospitalised. An u/s showed that twin 1 was about 2 weeks behind in growth and twin 2 was about 3 weeks behind. The u/s also showed that twin 2 was experiencing reversal in his umbilical artery.

My understanding of the situation is:

When reversal is seen in the cord the baby is usually delivered immediately as this condition precedes fetal demise.

However, delivering at 25 weeks would have compromised both babies so they decided to hold on and monitor closely. They did not expect twin 2 to survive but did not want to compromise twin 1.

What is so strange is that my friend's PE seems to have cleared up (which I understand does not happen!) and they are now saying she didn't have PE.

In spite of twin 2 having reversal in the umbilical artery for over 2 weeks he is still doing well; strong heartbeat, strong movements and plenty of amniotic fluid.

the docs are a bit stumped as they don't understand:
1. why my friend's PE seems to have disappeared
2. why twin 2 is not failing

My friend is now 28 weeks and they are deciding whether to deliver or hang on as twin 2 seems to be kicking along in spite of the reversal. Subsequent u/s has shown twin 1 is growing well, twin 2 has grown a little, still has the reversal in the blood flow, but the reversal is not worse and he has no other signs of deterioration!

Can anyone shed any light on this???

Hi Rachele,
I am so sorry, I don't have any experience with what you're asking about, but I wanted to make sure to welcome you to our boards and tell you usually someone here will have experience with most things. Best wishes and best of luck to your friend and her babies....

Sergio, this post is 8 years old, so I do not think she will reply.

How many weeks pregnant? Is she preeclamptic? Do both twins have reverse flow?

Hi Caryn

I saw that this post is 8 y old, but I can find more information about Reverse diastolic in other place. She is not preeclamptic. Only one baby has the reverse, we are now if 11,5 weeks.

thanks
