On Aldomet and TIRED!!!

Hi, all---here's a little update and a question! I have been on Aldomet 500MG twice a day for about 10 days now. It seems to be working pretty well---my BP has gone down gradually and now is running about 115/70 or so---certainly much lower than the 160/100 it was when they put me on it! I am at about 11 weeks. I know one of the side effects of Aldomet is being tired, but I am BEYOND tired! For example, yesterday I got up about 9:30am, went to church, came home, went back to sleep from about 12-4pm, was up until about 7pm, slept from 7pm-7am, took my boys to school, and then napped from 10-12noon! And right now at about 1pm I am fighting the urge to nap again. I talked to my nurse last week about the tiredness, and she didn't have much to say about it, just that it's a side effect you sort of have to put up with. But I am getting NOTHING done and that kind of sleeping seems extreme to me. I am also on thyroid meds and they are being adjusted also so that might add to the problem. Just wondered if anyone else was dealing with that sort of tiredness, or if on other meds you don't get as tired? It's all worth it of course for a healthy baby and me, but if I could have that AND be awake sometimes, that would be nice!

Hmmm, when I started getting that tired with the atenolol recently, when I reduced my dose, it helped. I wonder if you could reduce your dose safely, without compromising your BP? Maybe something to talk to your doc about! I hope you feel better soon!

Oh dear.... sounds like me. I have been out of it since they started me on Aldomet a week ago. I am on the lowest possible dose and all I want to do is sleep. I could sleep all day and then have no trouble going to sleep at night. Of course I cannot do this with Sam. I have felt very BAD and headaches are bad too. Maybe someone can shed some light on this for both of us.
Sorry you feel so bad also.

Hugs,
Suzanna

Wow, Suzanna, that sounds EXACTLY like me. I have never been this tired in my life---it's just like you say, I could sleep all day long and then sleep all night long. I am headachy too, and just feel generally not good. I would like to see if I could lower the dose, as I think I am on a fairly high dose, but I don't think I will be able to, as just by mistake a few nights ago I forgot my night dose, and the next morning my BP was right back up there. I have an appt. on the 20th, but I will call them before that if this continues, as it's making it almost impossible to do most anything. It must be SO SO hard with a little one, Suzanna! I am lucky that my boys are in school a lot of the day, but I feel guilty that even when they are home, I have so little energy to do much with them. I hope you feel much better soon. Let me know if you find out anything to help, and I will do the same!

I've been on Aldomet for a couple of years, pregnant and not and haven't notice the tiredness. My dose is relatively low, 250mg BID, so maybe that's it. Hmmm, don't know.

Suzanne, like you I was recently put on aldomet 500mg 2x/day (switched from atenolol). The first few days all I wanted to do is sleep! Now I've adjusted to it (maybe my body "remembers" from preg #1), and feel fine. My OB told me it has a sedative effect (it is a Central Acting Agent -- works on your brain), which is good when you have Hypertension in Preg, since we should be resting more anyway! I hope it continues to keep your pressure nice and stable, and that you start to feel better![:I]

OK, I posted about a month ago that Aldomet doesn't make me tired - guess what! I've been on my new dose, 500mg BID for about two weeks and I'm tired ALL the time! I nap on weekends and sometimes after work - it's ridiculous! I mean, I would love it if I were on bedrest, it would kill so much time, but I work FT and it's not conducive to productivity!! I'm going in Wed for lab work and will mention it to the nurse! Sheesh!

Hi, Therese! Let me know what happens on Wednesday when you talk to the nurse! I wound up going off the Aldomet about a month ago. For me the tiredness turned out to be part of a larger sort of rare side effect---it was destroying my white blood cells and also showing signs of causing kidney damage. I got VERY sick due to having no resistance because of the low white count. So maybe they could check your white count? I know that's not always the reason people get tired on Aldomet, but it's worth checking! I have been taking a pretty low dose of Labetolol for a month now, and mostly it's been fine. Just the last few days I'm again getting more tired, but not like that AWFUL Aldomet tiredness! I will be thinking of you!!

Thanks, Suzanne. I will let you know what the nurse says. I hope it's not doing any damage, I've been on it for years! I never went off after we started trying the second time. I am really hoping it's lowered my BP. Either that or I get to cut back on work!! I would take that, too!
