One of the World's smallest babies is in my NICU!

There was a press release today concerning a baby born 10.8 oz at 27 weeks at the NICU of my kids. It was on the news and the press release is : http://www.edward.org/ZoeRelease.pdf

The picture was on the news but not on the website. The mom has lupus and the autoimmune disease compromised the placenta. I have a feeling that even though she was born so small, that she is going to make it!! That NICU is great and the release said that she is a fighter. I'll try to update when I hear more.

Its amazing what happens to some babies.

When Mason was born, there was a woman at my hospital who had been in a car accident several years prior and had the seat belt go through her abdomen. The hospital had to reconstruct it for her and fast forward to when she got pregnant, they had to set up some special net type thing to allow her stomach to expand etc..

They ended up tkaing the baby fairly early (before 32 weeks) because they could do nothing else to allow the baby room to grow.

Just goes to show not matter the odds against you, good things do happen!

Did you see the one born in '38 that was fed with brandy and lived 44 years? [:p]

Also did you see they are mainly girls? The two boys that I looked the details for both had ongoing problems...

My husband's Auntie Peg (probably getting close to 70 at this stage) was about 2 lb when she was born. According to my FIL they wrapped her in lambswool and rubbed her skin with olive oil!! No hospital, rural Ireland. Amazing!

My grandma (born in rural Alberta, Canada) was only about 3 lbs. at birth (or so she says...). They didn't even call for the doctor because they figured she was just going to die. She said that they wrapped her up, put her in a small box (like a shoe box size), and put her by the wood burning stove. My great-grandpa would periodically pick her up, flip her over and smack her repeatedly on the back. She told me (in all seriousness) to do this with Maggie in the NICU, but somehow I think that the nurses wouldn't have approved...[:D]

A cousin was 1 lb at birth (in the 1940s). He said they wrapped him in a blanket and kept him in a dresser drawer by the fireplace.

He was so amazed, looking at Aaron in the NICU... realizing that Aaron was DOUBLE his birth weight!

Now, he's a big, tall healthy man.
