loud breathing

My son is almost 4 months old now and is making loud breathing sounds, breathing in and out, when he sleeps. I don't think he is snoring but I don't know what else it could be. He has his pulmonolgy appt in 2 weeks for his RSV shot and I will ask then. But until then I was wonder if any of you have experienced the same breathing sounds, and what was the cause. He isn't sick but he does have reflux, if that helps. I know I am probably being silly [:p] but since he spent 4 days on a respirator when he was born I think I am a little paranoid.

Hmm... interesting. I don't remember Aaron having that, but I know that the reflux can do lots of goofy things with breathing. Good luck with your appointment.

I don't know what that is, but my son has it too, and if I remember correctly, I think my daughter did. It doesn't seem to bother him, and actually it comforts me, because I can hear him breathe while he's snoozing. My husband and I are not exactly quiet sleepers either though.

hehe okay, digging back in my brain and something popped up. This had more to do with eyes, but I think its also transferable to the nose.

They may sound heavier because the nasal passageways (in fact most of the bones of the face etc..) are very tiny in babies and get bigger as they grow. This is esepcially seen in tear ducts. My oldest son's tear ducts would ALWAYS become clogged until he was almost a year old (leading to him looking really gooey and eye infections) and the doctor explained that it was caused by the ducts being still small and his nasal passages being too small to handle the fluids coming through them.

Thus, its quite possible that the reason why the baby sounds like a heavy breathier while sleeping is that the nasal passages are to small to allow them to blow air out the nose while exhaling, thus they are inhaling and exhaling through the mouth which is much louder. Also you probably don't notice this during the day due to background noise.

Wow, that makes a lot of sense, he also still has blocked tear ducts. I think he will have goopy eyes forever.[:p]

Now I can sleep easier knowing it is normal.

Amy I know what you mean, Emily is still in bed with us and she snores so does DH, oh and dont forget the dogs that sleep in my room at night also. I am the only quiet sleeper in the house[:D]. It is amazing I get any sleep at all.
