Hey! My name is Theresa, I'm 20 years old, and my little boy is two weeks old, and was born 7 weeks early due to the sudden onset of preeclampsia. Luckily he will be heading home soon from the NICU so that's very exciting =]
My pregnancy was pretty much uneventful until I was around 29-30 weeks when my blood pressure started going up and up, but because it would go back down, I wasn't prescribed any medication for it, I was just monitored every week. Then on June 19th, I had gone into a CVS to get a prescription filled, and while I was waiting I went ahead and checked my blood pressure there. It was 165/100. I thought it was inaccurate but decided to call my doctor anyway. They told me to come on in just to make sure it's not anything serious.
When I get to the hospital, they check my blood pressure and it's still 165/100. About 10 minutes later it gets higher. They put me on an IV and give me meds to attempt to make it go down, but it doesn't help. At this point, I'm not panicking yet -- I was pretty much just chilling out, hoping to be able to go home soon, so I wasn't contributing to it going up. They watch me for an hour, and my nurse ends up not telling me my blood pressure and turns the machine away. Everytime I ask what it is, she says "It's alright, honey", trying not to worry me. About an hour and a half into being there, there are more nurses in my room and they all leave. Five minutes later, my main nurse comes in and tells me the situation and that we're going to have to get my son out as soon as possible. I didn't know it then, but I later found out that my blood pressure was 214/100, and I almost had a stroke.
About an hour after they tell me that, my son is born by emergency c-section at 7:45pm. Unfortunately, I don't remember anything after having an oxygen mask on my face because I had to be completely knocked out because the anestesiologist couldn't get the spinal in after trying three times (ow =[). Luckily he was a healthy 5lbs 2oz, 18in. long, and had a good scream, so I heard =]
He was in the special care nursery at my hospital until he was transferred to the NICU on the 24th where we're at now because of a distended abdomen and not being able to digest anything. They thought they'd have to have surgery on my little guy, but it turned out to just be a mucous plug caught in his bowels, so after it was out, they just monitored him. He did have trouble breathing after he was born, and would breathe really heavy. But luckily now his breathing is normal and he's eating and growing like a weed =]
Although he wasn't itty bitty, it still killed me seeing my first child in an incubator with wires all over his body and a tube in his mouth, which would later be in his nose. That's not how you expect to experience your first child...
But now he's out of the incubator and in a rolling crib, and just started bottle and breastfeeding. I'm so excited to bring my little one home soon =D
I'm glad I found this group...I don't know many preemie parents, and I don't know anyone who had preeclampsia except for my mother who I don't talk to often. So I hope to get know all of you very soon =]
God bless all of you and your little ones!!!
