Barely a hypothesis, actually. They don't give much information about how they derived these figures or what factors they controlled (if any), but it's disturbing that they suggest women over 35 should wait even longer to TTC. I also worry that women who DON'T want twins might read this and decide to skimp on folate.

Vitamins and more during pregnancy
Re : Vitamins and more during pregnancy
Suzanna, I'm with Marcy on the excercise. I was taking dance class twice a week and swimming regularly, running up and down stairs at the parking lot at work throughout my pregnancy. I felt in pretty good shape right up until about a week or so before I got sick, even then I think it was shape and time of year, not forbodings of preeclampsia. I'm completely convinced that being in good physical health, while it may not prevent the disease (I'm a fan of the "placenta/maternal dysfunction" hypotheses), helps you recover from it and possible minimizes the negative effects on your health.

Re : Vitamins and more during pregnancy
Suzanna,
I think I'm ALWAYS neurotic about pregnancy these days, even though we can't start "trying" until January! I've even told my OB that as I take my pill each day, I pray that it fails... Certified nut here[:o)]
But anyway, getting back to the topic...[:)] My docs have differing opinions... After consulting with my regular OB, the peri that delivered my son and, a peri consult at a teaching hospital - this is what we've come up with. I'm still taking prenatals and once we start trying, I'll add the extra calcium, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and a baby aspirin. My doctor also stated that the baby aspirin should be taken at night, something about the blood thickening while you sleep I think. Interesting to note that the 2 peris disagreed on when to start with the aspirin - one said immediately, the other said once the heartbeat was established. We've decided to go with first option although, I think I'm going to "Ask the Experts" as well. Also, neither peri said anything about the Vitamin C & E but, since we have read quite a bit about possible advantages and, my OB agreed it could not hurt, we figure why not?
I haven't heard anything about the extra folic acid causing mutliples. Not that I wouldn't love two little babies at once but, I would be even that more nervous.
I'm share your fear about future pregnancies. I am overjoyed at the thought of being pregnant and having a little one but, am terrified about what I know can happen. I haven't had any dreams about it but, I have done things like take out a life insurance policy.
Anyway, sorry about my long-winded answer! I'd be really curious to know when everyone is/has starting their therapies as well.

Let's start a still-not-pregnant club.[:(]
Did it say how much folic acid they were talking about? Or how much it increased your risk? I haven't heard anything about this.

Re : Vitamins and more during pregnancy
Sorry to bring this post back around, but I am being a bit neurotic about pregnancy at the moment. No I am still NOT pregnant [:(]
Did any of you start the regimen of vits and such while ttc? I am only taking my prenatals at the moment. I just read an article that suggested taking in extra folic acid while ttc can increase your chances of conceiving twins. Which then I think about the high risk of having hbp with a multiple pregnancy. I was shocked to read this and I take it as just a theory. Has anyone else heard of this happening?
I am feeling scared about another pregnancy. I actually had a dream the other night that I died while giving birth because of hbp. I think my mind is my worst enemy. Has anyone had these thoughts or dreams?
Ugh. I think I am exhausted. Thanks for listening to me!

Re : Vitamins and more during pregnancy
I just read a short article in Cooking Light magazine that stated this regarding walnuts and omega-3 fatty accids:
"With just a handful of walnuts--1/4 cup to be exact--you'll get all
the omega-3's you need in a day, about 1.9 grams (the same amount found in 4 1/2 ounces of cooked salmon)."
...for those of you who don't like fish!

That makes sense; besides, enslaved chickens can't lay truly good eggs.

Mada - I just read something about those eggs in a magazine (sorry, can't remember which one [:p]) and it said that you were better off to eat fish high in omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon). Although the eggs did contain more omega-3's than regular eggs, the amount of increase was not huge. I think it said that you would get more omega-3's from eating one ounce of fish than from one egg.

Has anyone seen extra-nutrient eggs? They have extra vitamin E and omega-3 and something else (DHA? something with 3 initials). They give the chickens a special diet, but they're not free-range. [:(] They cost almost twice as much as ordinary eggs, but the box says "Supports a Healthy Pregnancy," which pushes all my sucker buttons.
