Today's Dr Apt.

I've decided to switch doctors and have my next apt. scheduled with her. This doctor I saw (gave him a second chance) was even worse this time! I asked him if we could go over "what if's" and when I asked him questions, I got responses varrying from "Doctor's don't treat hypertension with medicine in pregnancy" (as in all doctors, not just him) to "those statistics are wrong, you will not get it again." He didn't care where my information came from nor did he want to spend any time answering my questions. And, I found out that the whole, "you can't get an epidural" thing he threw at me last week should have been, "you can't get an epidural but can get an interthecal." What would have been so hard about explaining what my options were instead of just telling me I couldn't get an epi? I lost weight this month but he still gave me the "don't gain anything yet" lecture. Ugh, sorry for the rant. Perhaps I'll just have to explain to the new doctor that my fear isn't exactly that I'll get it again, but that my concers will be brushed off like they were today. I so hope the other doctor is better! *crosses fingers*

I recommend to all our women--if you get a response like this to send me (anne@preeclampsia.org) the name and address of your doctor and we will send literature to them directly bringing them up to speed. We have a strong endorsement of professionals behind us and they are more likely to listen to another doctor than to a frightened woman. Sorry about that!! But we can effect change--we just have to do so in a way that allows everyone to feel they are being respected even the doctor. ;)

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience, that would make me SO MAD!! I'm glad that you are switching doctors, hopefully the new one will be much more informed, or at least open to hearing what you have to say.

So sorry you are going through this mess with this doc! i would switch too! (OH - I did yesterday!) You deserve the best care and clear options during this time. I hope things go better with the other doc you will meet with. Please let us know. When is your next appointment?

I do have one or two other options...all in the same practice though. Two doctors share a practice (or are partners, whatever you call them?) and they have a nurse midwife that also offers full services. So, I'm seeing the other doctor next (February 19th, I beleive) and if that doesn't go well, I have hopes that atleast the nurse midwife will listen to my concerns and I guess if things started going haywire, I'd go visit my family elsewhere for a month or three? lol I'm hopeful that this other doctor will be good.

I agree, I'd be willing to call and give him a "heads up!" You can't be the only pregnant woman with high blood pressure he's ever seen! Good call on switching drs. I really hope the new one is better! Hang in there!
