Preeclampsia @ 19 yrs of age

My name is Kathryn Ross, and I had a baby girl when I was 19. I carried my daughter very well for almost nine months. I went to my routine doctor appointments with my OBGYN, and took my vitamins daily. I never consumed a drop of alcohol or did any drugs while pregnant. I had the perfect pregnancy. I did not experience morning sickness, never had high blood pressure, and I honestly can say I felt good being pregnant and had a lot of energy at times.

I remember my last doctor visit very well. September 9, 2003. I went to the doctor and had my weight, blood pressure, etc. checked, and everything was fine. My due date was September 18, 2003. I remember very well the doctor telling me I can come back the following week and pick my daughter's birthday. I was so excited, only to not get to pick that special day. Before I left the office, the doctor stretched my cervix. I had not lost any of my mucus plug, so the doctor had said once she stretched my cervix I may go into labor. I left the office happy, but hurting in my lower back. For the next few hours after that, I walked around the neighborhood trying to ease the pain in my back, and finally I was on my way to the hospital.

I received medication through my IV to induce my labor, and the nurses broke my water. I experienced a pain that I have not felt since this day. I had medication administered to me twice, but the medicine never took effect. I felt every inch of pain in the lower part of my stomach. I begged for someone's help. There was a point where I felt nausea from the pain in my body. I remember hearing nurses say, "She may have a stroke," and "We may have to take the baby by C-Section." I hurt so bad I did not care what they had to do to ease the pain. I had preeclampsia. My daughter's heart rate dropped, and my blood pressure rose. Every inch of my body was swollen. I was also anemic. I lost a lot of blood during my labor. I never really understood how or why I had preeclampsia. Every doctor visit was great, even the visit I had on this horrific day. I gave birth to my daughter naturally, and she was okay thanks to God. I ended up okay thanks to God, but I will not allow myself to have anymore children because of the fear of preeclampsia. I am 28 now, and have a great and wonderful 8 year old, but the problems that rose on September 9, 2003 are still a mystery to me. My daughter was born September 10, 2003 @ 3:50a.m. weighing 6 lbs., 15 oz.
