I thought I would share my story of postpartum preeclampsia because prior to having it, I had never even heard of this condition!
It started back in 2000, with the pregnancy of our son, Jonah. Because it was my first pregnancy, I had no idea that I was having contractions at 34 weeks, I just thought the baby was "balling" up in me!! When I went for a check up and during the examination, the doctor could feel the contraction and asked if I had been having those regularly, "Um, yes forever!" That did it, complete bed rest until I delivered at 37 weeks, he was coming no matter what! Thank goodness, he was happy and healthy! We were sent home after 24 hours and we were on our own... scary! The next morning I woke up VERY SWOLLEN, so swollen, I weighed more than when I delivered. My vision was blurred and I had an awful headache and felt just bad. My husband is a physician and he took my blood pressure, not once, not twice, but four times. "Get in the car, we are going to the hospital." My normal BP is usually 110/65, even with the pregnancy, that day it was 190/100. Scary. The doctors put me on BP meds and bed rest, again, and it finally came down 6 weeks later.Â
Fast forward nine months later, I find out I am pregnant with number two, unexpected since I never even had a period due to breastfeeding! I am watched carefully for pre-term labor and preeclampsia. I start contracting at 15 weeks. We make it to 34.5 weeks and he arrives. Healthy, happy, 6lb-6oz baby Isaiah! No preeclampsia and no postpartum preeclampsia, YAY!Â
Now, four years has passed, again I am on complete bed rest for the third time and Griffin comes at 38 weeks! New meds to stop the contractions worked! But, as they are getting ready to discharge me, I tell them I don't feel well. Yup, postpartum preeclampsia again. I stay in the hospital for another four days. After 6 weeks of bed rest and BP meds, it finally returns to normal. My Ob/Gyn did advice me not to get pregnant again, "You had a nasty case of preeclampsia and I would not recommend having any more children." I agree with her, for my case. I have three healthy happy boys and I am BLESSED!
