It was really frustrating. My husband is a paramedic and we kept taking my blood pressure. It was steadily increasing. I was swelling (edema) and I felt terrible. My doctor wasn't taking us seriously. They NEVER checked my urine for protein. We kept telling her that my blood pressure was in the 140/90's, but everytime I was in clinic it was 120/80. Which still isn't normal. One day I woke up with a headache that wouldn't go away with tyenol. I went in to the hospital and was diagnosed with Severe Preeclampsia. It was really scary! Luckily my baby was healthy, early but healthy. I ended up being readmitted to the hospital a few days after I was discharged with a blood pressure of 172/115. The Emergency Department nurse didn't feel I was an emergency and made me sit in the waiting room for 45minutes. She didn't realize that women can still be preeclamptic for up to 3 weeks postpartum. The medical community has a lot to learn. WE WERE LUCKY!
