my husband and I had been trying for a baby for about eight months when we finally concieved in february '01. I guess you can say that this, my first pregnancy , was jinxed right from the very start. It took us a while to concieve because I had recently been diagnosed with having an under-active thyroid gland which was making my periods very erratic. when I was about three weeks pregnant I had radiation dye put through my viens so I could have x-rays taken of my kidney which was swollen due to a blockage in it. ( obviously I didn't know I was pregnant as this was a very dangerous procedure to have done whilst pregnant.) Even though we had been trying for a baby it was a huge shock for us when we disovered we were, and a very scary one. for a while it was thought I might have an eptopic pregnancy as the only reason I found out I was pregnant was because I went to the doctors because I had an enormous ammount of pain in my womb. Fourtunatly it was'nt and we made it through to twelve weeks at which point we started to relax becuse the risky part was over, so we thought (how wrong we were!!) I thought the sickness was going to ease off at this point but it just seemed to get worse with every passing day. Then at sixteen weeks things got even worse as I was diagnosed with having diabetes. It was very servere and I ended up injecting about 80 units of insulin a day. however on the plus side my morning sickness did ease off a bit at this point. The next few weeks went by and I started to get used to the diabetes and the ritual of injecting insulin. There was a plus point that I got to have scans every other week, which was lovely. Then at my twenty three week scan we were told we were having a boy. unfortunatly at the same scan we were told that he was looking quite small for his age (about three weeks behind.) However I had a great consultant and specialist diabetic midwife who explained all about small for dates babies and illnesses that can be linked with small babies (one of which was pre-eclampsia). however at this point I had no symptons of it at all. Then one morning when I was about six months pregnant I woke up to a really dull ache in my hands. They were so swollen I couldn't move my wedding ring and could barley bend my fingers. I called my midwife who came out and took my blood pressure, which was borderline high so she booked me into the hospital. I spent the next few hours having the babies heartbeat monitored and blood tests taken. Everything checked out ok and even though I still felt ill I was sent home. A few weeks later after having it ok'd by my doctor I went to go and visit my mom who lives about four hours away. On the way we stopped for a rest and promptly fell asleep. when I woke up my hands, feet and face were all badly swollen and I felt really ill. I spent the next day in bed but by the afternoon was seeing flashing lights in my eyes, and still felt ill , so my mom took me to the doctors. My blood pressure was over 100 and I had plus two protein. He admited me to the local hospital, where I spent the next week. I spent the whole week asking if I could go back home to my hospital where my consultant was , eventually after about nine days they said i could go home, but only if I promised to go straight to the hospital. The next day I was home and like a lot of people ignored the doctor and left it two days untill my next ante-natal appointment to see someone. At this appointment by bp was still over 100 so I was admitted back into hospital. this was the second week of september and I stopped there till I had my son at 35 weeks on tuesday october the second. I can't really remember alot about the weekend before I had bodie appart from I couldn't walk anywhere on my own because my eyes would roll around in my head and I kept nearly blacking out. my husband stopped in my room on the nights because the staff were worried I might start having fits.Unfortunatly during this weekend my consultant was away so noone could do a lot with me. I only now realise that I should have been on tablets to lower by bp and mag sulfate to stop fits. however when my consultant arrived on monday I was crying on my bed and begged him to let me have my baby he said my bloods were not looking very good and asked if I wanted to be induced. I asked if I could have a c-section as I had no energy to give birth , he agreed that this was the best option for me. My son was born at 9:54 on tuesday morning by cesarean section. I was given a spinal block so I was awake throughout the dilivery, it was amazing. Bodie was born weighing 4lb6oz, and scored nine on both agpar tests. we got to hold him for about five minuets then he was taken to the nnu as he was having trouble breathing. He spent 10 days in the neonatal unit and then came on to the ward with me. At first they wouldn't let us go home as he was having problems breast feeding. Eventually I decided to try him on a bottle, which was a really turning point for us. Three days later we were home. Bodie is now eight and a half months old, crawling, sitting up on his own and saying dadda. he's amazing. I think in alot of ways my expierience of pre-eclampsia has made me stronger. My husband and I are now thinking of getting pregnant again (as belive it or not I REALLY miss being pregnant.) Although I am a little scared of getting pre-eclampsia again, but i know if I do i'll have the best possible care. The most important part I think is that my son is healthy, and i'm ok.Everything I went through was worth it,and I would go through it all again tommorrow if I had to. Just fingers crossed i won't. xxx |

I hadn’t been feeling well for a few days. I decided I would go in to work super early and give directions to the staff and then go home and go to the doctor. I got home and lay on the couch un...
