At 22 weeks and 2 days pregnant with my daughter Madyson, I started having really bad pain in my upper right quadrant just under my ribs and in the middle of my chest. I went to the hospital and complained of the pain and shortness of breath. My blood pressure at the Emergency Room was 186/104. I was told I had to be "evaluated" in the ER first then transferred to the OB ward. I was made to take a pregnancy test saying that they needed to have it in the chart that I was pregnant. (Like my swollen belly was not a clue). Blood work showed that my liver enzymes were elevated and my platelets were decreased. After a few hours they were taking me to do an ultrasound of my internal organs i.e. liver, gall bladder etc...Before they started the ultrasound on those organs I asked them to go down and show us the baby to make sure she was ok. She was moving, covering her nose, and her heart was beating. They later admitted me to the MEDICAL FLOOR and not the OB floor. The next day I was released from the hospital still with the pain and the diagnosis for either gallbladder or hiatal hernia. The next day after that I had an appointment with my regular OB for a fetal echo-cardiogram. That is when they told me that my daughter had "passed away". They then told me I was suffering from preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome and rushed me to the Children's Hospital to be induced. I could not have an epidural without killing me so they gave me a Morphine pump. 13 hours later I gave "birth" to my daughter. Madyson Alaina Morales weighed 1 pound 1 ounce and was 10 inches long. We miss her very much and LOVE her immensely!!! I am still suffering from blood pressure problems (mild) and depression. If anyone can share with me their sorrow or if you have suffered the same symptoms and such and have tried again for another pregnancy, share with me. We are going to try again in about 6-8 months for another child. |

Posted On Wednesday, November 10, 2010 by Stacey I read your story and can't believe the hospital released you. Did your O/B see you at the hospital?? Why would they put you on the regular medical floor and not OB?  My story is this: I had a symptom free pregnancy, but was having slightly elevated blood pressure readings at my appts. I went to my doctor once a week until I was 12 wks and then once a month. My doctor attributed my elevated blood pressure to the twin pregnancy then at my last appt (9-30-10 on a Thursday) my blood pressure was 170/100 and I was immediately admitted to the hospital. I was told I would probably be going home the next day and ordered on bed rest for the remainder of the pregnancy, but after seeing a high risk O/B at the hospital she ordered additional blood tests and I was told I needed to stay all weekend. The ultrasound showed both babies were fine. Well all weekend my enzymes and platelets were getting out of whack so on Monday 11-4-10 I was told I was started to be in liver failure b/c my enzymes were over 300 and my platelets were at 23,000 and there was protein in my urine, HELLP syndrome. So my doctor ordered a c section and under general anesthesia our twins, one boy, Bruce III and one girl, Gia, were delivered and lived for about one hour. Gia weighed a little over 12 oz and Bruce weighed 9 oz. During my hospital stay my blood pressure was crazy and was different at every reading. I was placed on medicine, which when I was sent home 11-7, didn't help. So after being home a few days my blood pressure was still high and I was sent to the hospital again on 11-9. I remained there for another day and sent home on different meds, which helped. I had to take my pressure a few times a day for any problems and after a few weeks I was able to get off the meds totally and now have normal blood pressure readings. I understand your depression. I felt like I was in a fog in the hospital and couldn't remember a lot of stuff that happened. I was hoping it was all a dream. At first I couldn't react to what happened and I know I was in shock. We have been trying to get pregnant for years and had to turn to fertility treatments. So after several IUI treatments, 1 miscarriage, 2 IVF's, we finally turned to IVF with an egg donor and that's how we got pregnant, on the first try no less. I've been off work since this happened and sometimes being alone or shows on tv, sets off crying sprees. I had the babies room already completed and baby furniture put together, waiting for the babies. I had purchased the double stroller and two car seats and other items, which I had to return. That was difficult.   But now I have to walk by the room everyday and see it completed, without the babies. I definitely want a reason for contracting HELLP syndrome, but everything I've been told is because of the twin pregnancy. All of my blood work came back fine with only one abnormal gene mutation, which is for folic acid absorption. Both doctors I saw said this had no factor on the HELLP syndrome and said that since I was on a good prenatal vitamin it wouldn't cause the symptoms I had. We are going to try again in six months, probably April 2011. We have three frozen embryos waiting and the doctor said he will on transfer only one at a time.    |

I hadn’t been feeling well for a few days. I decided I would go in to work super early and give directions to the staff and then go home and go to the doctor. I got home and lay on the couch un...
