My daughter had migraines, horrible indigestion, pain in her right side, very very swollen ankles and legs. When she complained to her ob/gyn, she was told she had normal, end of pregnancy complaints and she would be fine. She was 40 weeks pregnant. She called me and was sick and vomitting, couldn't keep anything down (this had been going on for months), I said to call her dr. She did, they said to do a fetal kick count and call back. They had her go to the hospital and they did some tests, no protein in her urine. They sent her home, saying she would have the baby that weekend. She was only dilated to 1/2 to 1 centimeter. Late that Sunday, her husband took her to the hospital, she was on a monitor when it went off, nurse told her she had to have a c-section as the baby was in distress. She delivered her baby boy at a whopping 9lbs, 4oz. Large babies are supposed to be a sign of HELLPS and she was very large. She came back to her room, had a hard time waking up. Her dr didn't know what to do. One of her partners put my daughter in ICU so she could be watched closer. Dr's couldnt decide if she had hellps, ttp, dic or what.
After a week of multiple tests, various dr's coming and going, we were told she was brain dead. The next day, she had reaction to pain......not braindead! We ended up at a clinic(who diagnosed her with HELLPS) with needing a liver transplant.. They found a liver and was told she would wake up in a week and would be fine. Two days later, her brain herniated into her brain stem and was brain dead. We donated her kidneys but her son will never know her. She never saw him. He had a portion of his bladder on the outside of his body, so he was at a different hospital (Childrens) Those nurses had him transported to her bed and he lay in his comatose mothers arms and was baptized. He is doing wonderful after surgery. By the way, this ob/gyn missed the bladder issue on the ultrasounds. "I missed that one. There is so much going on down there"...............what???!!! And she came highly recommended!!!
His daddy is taking care of him but misses his wife so much. We miss our daughter and sister.
How can a doctor miss those extreme symptoms of HELLPS??? We will not sue her but we are working with the MN state board and having her investigated. We have told sooo many people about HELLPS. It should NEVER happen to another woman.
Ethan will be turning 3 at the end of this month (October). The month of October always brings up some scary memories and emotions for me... I never thought I would have a difficult pregnancy or labor. After all...
