On Tues. Oct.19, I measured small for the second week in a row. With a history of pre-e that can be alarming. They sent me for an ultrasound that showed the baby at 5 pounds 5 ounces. At 37 weeks that put her in the 7th percentile. So we went to the hospital for an NST and lab work. I was sent home and told to return the next day for results. They ran another NST. My BP's were coming in slightly high but nothing alarming. They told me I was fine and sent me on my way. My next appointment was Tues Oct. 26 baby was still measuring 2-3 weeks behind. They decided to talk induction. They kept bringing up the fact that I had pre-e. I was extremely confused b/c the week before I was told I was... Read More

On Feb. 24 (my birthday) I stayed up all night getting things together because I knew in my heart that something was happening the next day. I finally made it to bed around 5:30 the next morning. On Feb. 25 I was awoken at 10:00 to my midwife telling me I only had a few hours to get things together I was being induced that day due to my high BP and high protein levels (over a 4000). I called my husband at work and he came home as soon as he could (well after he found his keys that the guy at work thought would be funny to hide). We arrived at the hospital and they hooked me up to half a dozen monitors and began round 1 of Cervadil. The first round of... Read More

Preeclampsia and HELLP changed our lives.

At the dawning of each new year since 1993, I find myself reflecting on that year and the circumstances leading up to it and the achievements since. I've written about it numerous times as I do now. I have so much to be grateful for and it all began somewhere around New Years Eve 1992. I was invited to a New Years Eve party that night and declined at the last minute as I wasn't feeling well and was just over 30 weeks pregnant. The first 3 months of 1993 are a blur. The facts (some are remembered, others have been told to me): As the morning of January 4th dawned, convinced I had the flu, I called in sick to work. (I worked for my Ob/Gyn, thank God, so he called to check on... Read More

After trying for a year in total and having a miscarriage at 3 months along, my husband and I rejoiced to find we were again pregnant! At 15 weeks I had awfully painful cramping and rushed to my doctor, a ultrasound showed a low lying placenta, causing me pain. I soon quit my job as a cleaner and stayed at home mostly and trained horses on the side (without any more physical activity then walking, no lifting, riding etc.). This helped keep the cramping to a minimum and my 20 week ultrasound showed a lifted placenta and I had no more pain. Yeah God had healed this! I had a perfect pregnancy until around the 8th month or so. My legs begun to swell, and my blood pressure... Read More

Where do I start, it's been almost 7 years and still seems like yesterday that this "song" was forever engraved in my mind and heart! I told myself that I would keep this to myself, it's much easier that way, or so I thought, but i've been inspired, oh yes inspired, and I'm gonna share my story, as sad as it may seem to some, it has a happy ending, a blessing that came my way on October 25th, 2004 and a miracle that appeared itself, or should I say herself on December 30th, 2009! You see, the saying "time heals all wounds" holds true, and sometimes it takes witnessing the struggle of another person and the way they overcome to inspire you, and yes i've been inspired!! So here it... Read More

This is my Story, I have lost my 1st Grandson (Scottie Jordan Cartagena) and my Faith and don't know how I could ever get it back nor do I know if I even want it back.April 2011; The 1st thing that came to my mind when I heard I was going to be Grandma for the 2nd time was, how could I love another as much as I love my Layla, and then when I saw my grandson's sonogram picture for the 1st time, I knew; it just happens. How could one heart hold so much love?October 5 2011; I planned my Grandson's funeral. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. The last time I came close to this kind of lost and pain was when I had to plan his grandfather's funeral which... Read More

My fiancé and I were very surprised the day we found out we were pregnant, and scared of the prospect of becoming parents... but once the initial shock wore off, we were also very excited about how our lives together would change. I had the dream pregnancy. I had mild morning sickness to 12 weeks which caused me to drop a few kilos before I began to gain and then my weight gain was very minimal and I was constantly being told how small I was looking which at the time I was very proud of but now I know it probably wasn’t a good thing. I lived in the country and worked for a city company so I was constantly on the road travellng to and from the... I'm Elaine, 27, and I experienced pre-eclampsia during the birth of my son Bradley, who is now 6. I was overdue and was getting a stiff neck. The midwife came out and said that my blood pressure was very, very high so I got rushed in to the hospital and the next minute I was tied to a hospital bed with 5 drips and blood pressure machine and was told I had 50/50 chance of surviving the birth. I had an emergency c-section and my son was delivered safely, weighing 8 pound 11. He was a big boy. I was then told I was very lucky.

I am the mother of fiveâ€â€but I only get to kiss two of my children goodnight so far. I have two boys, Thomas and Henry, and two daughters, Bridget and Elsie. I also have another little boy on the way. Thomas is six, plays t-ball, gymnastics and thinks Justin Beiber is cool. Henry is three, adores his big brother, loves Mickey Mouse and is becoming such a little boy, no more toddler. Bridget and Elsie died an hour after they were both born. They should be nearly four years old.It was my second pregnancy and we were shocked with spontaneous twins. Once the surprise wore off, we adjusted to the idea and to the... Read More

Me and my boyfriend tried to get pregnant for over a year, and when it finally happened we were so excited. I was so happy: all that was wrong was the normal things, nausea, vomiting, and eating. When I was 20 weeks along, we found out we were having a boy who we would name Larry Lewis Rich Jr. At 26 weeks, I found out that I had mild preeclampsia. I was scared, but the doctor said I shouldn't be worried because it was just mild and I would be ok. Well I was really sick and my feet were way too big to fit in any of my shoes. I started to get stretch marks on my legs because of how swollen they had gotten. So the doctor did a 24-hour urine; well no one got a hold of me, so I... Read More

Hi, my name is Shawn and this is my three year journey on trying to have a child which so far involves miscarriage, fertility issues, severe preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, death and surrogacy.I keep telling myself there has to be a reason that I’ve gone through everything I have. Am I supposed to learn a lesson or am I supposed to share my journey and struggles with others that have had similar situations. I’m not sure that I’ll ever know, but I do know that for me this is what I need to do to keep the memory of my beautiful twins Ava and Noah alive. I have to think I have not gone through all this... Many people develop pre-eclampsia in their 1st pregnancy, but that wasn't the case with me. Other than terrible nausea, I had very healthy pregnancies for my first two. Pregnancy #3 came along and I had gestational diabetes around 18 weeks. I followed a very strict diet and did not need insulin. At week 33, my blood pressure jumped. I took a 24-hour urine and the protein level was around 60. I took another 24-hour urine the next week, it was up to 300+ (now officially pre-eclampsia). At week 35, the protein jumped to 1600. I was swelling pretty badly, which is new for me - I did not swell even a little with my previous two. Early 36 weeks, because of the persistent headache and... Read More

My husband took me back to UCLA (where I was in intensive care for weeks) and walking the halls was odd. The nursing staff would first see my husband and smile and then their gaze would land on me and they would stand stock still, stare with a shocked expression.  It was as if I were Lazarus come back from the grave and they could not believe their eyes. It made me feel so strange.  For weeks afterwards I told my husband, "I feel like they are family that I left behind and I need to bring them out."  He said, "No honey, it's their job to be there. They want to be there."  But I had a hard time believing him (with my emotions.  I understood... Read More

After surviving a very traumatic first pregnancy with a nightmare delivery (30 hours of magnesium-induced hell, ending in an emergency c-section) and even more debilitating recovery, one would think I was DONE having children. Let's be honest, preeclampsia tends to put a damper on a mother's hopes for carrying other children! The health risks mean that many of us in the preeclampsia community state "one and done" with certainty that it is the correct choice for our own health and... Read More

I lost three naturally conceived pregnancies and did many failed fertility attempts before deciding to move on to DE IVF (at the advice of several REs).  However, at the advice of a therapist whose help I sought to deal with the grief I also had immunological and clotting tests run and I came up positive for APA with elevated NK count.  My RE said I should move on to DE and if I got pregnant I should take low dose prednizone during the first trimester and inject lovenox, a blood thinner, for the duration of the pregnancy.  I did both with my pregnancy, achieved with the help of an egg donor (first two possible donor cycles cancelled due to problems with the... Read More

God saved me as 19 years of age. I am sharing this testimony with you first, because if it hadn't been for God's divine intervention in my life, I wouldn't have made it through this traumatic event. I was raised in being told about God from my mom and grandparents, but I come from a very broken household. My parents divorced when I was 12. My dad was an alcholic and was imprisioned for DUI manslaughter for 10 years. Every day I woke up wondering what was the purpose for my life, why was I created? I struggled with feelings of depression and lonliness and tried to supress it with drugs, sex and friends. An addiction to cocanie eventually lead to a nealy fatal over-dose. After that, I...
