| When I was 17 years old, I found out that I was pregnant. I was so scared, I did not even tell my parents - and during the course of my 9 month pregnancy, I gained little weight and did not show. Of course, I had no pre-natal care. One night in June of 1988 - when I was full term - I felt very ill. The next thing I remember, I was in the hospital. My father had heard my waterbed sloshing around - and when he came in my room, I was having seizures. He called the ambulance, and they flew me to the hospital. My blood pressure was 200/180 - the doctor had to induce labor, and imagine my parents' surprise when the doctors told them that I was 9 months pregnant - and that I probably would not make it. I had a beautiful 7 pound 1 ounce baby boy, and fortunately he was perfect. I was in the hospital for over a week, I had a heart moniter in my neck and had to be given 2 pints of blood. The reason I share this story is this - if you are a young girl and are afraid to tell like I was, it might cost you your life. Pre-Natal care is so important - my experience with eclampsia may have been prevented if I had pre-natal care. I feel so lucky to be alive - and so lucky that my son is a healthy, smart 14 year old now. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the families that have been through this - especially those who were not as fortunate as I was. I also thank the paramedics, doctors, nurses and my dad - who saved my life. |
