My name is Jennifer Sawyers-Gray. I gave birth in my 35th week on December 12, 2000. The pregnancy had been going very well previous to that day. I had managed to keep my weight at 28lbs. thus far and everything was wonderful. Weeks prior to the birth, the doctors told me via ultra-sound that my baby was around 6.5lbs. and everything was looking great. On December the 11th, I noticed excessive swelling in my face, legs, and feet. I thought that I had just been on my feet too much, I teach kindergarten, so I rested. The following morning I was getting ready for work and the swelling had only gotten worse. I was unable to wear any of my shoes with the exception of slippers, which is what I wore to work. Since I had no prior problems with the pregnancy, I waited until that afternoon to consult my doctor, since I had my weekly appointment that day anyway. I drove myself to the doctor and was shocked that my bloodpressure had jumped from 104/82 the previous week to 148/128! The urine sample proved that I had a large amount of protein in my blood. They scheduled an ultra-sound and were shocked that not only was the baby breech, but seemed to have lost a tremendous amount of weight. Because they feared for the baby's health as well as mine, they performed an emergency c-section. At 5:10 p, Rebecca Faith was born weighing a fragile 3lbs. even. As I recovered in the hospital for a week, Becca stayed in the hospital's NICU for three weeks. We were blessed to have such a healthy child, despite her weight, Becca had fully developed healthy lungs, and was over-all fine. She was to stay in the NICU to get her weight up, and to monitor for any problems, which did not occur. The doctors told me that my case was so severe that if I had waited another 48 hours Becca would not be with us, and I would have kidney failure and probably be in a coma. I am happy to say that today, at 3 1/2 months, Becca is healthy and weighs 10 1/2 lbs. |

I hadn’t been feeling well for a few days. I decided I would go in to work super early and give directions to the staff and then go home and go to the doctor. I got home and lay on the couch un...
