My Story When I first got pregnant I was temporarily living in an isolated country town in Canada, with my husband from whom I am now divorced. I had a normal pregnancy, physically speaking, right up until the end of the 35th week. The differences were the emotional factors. This was my first pregnancy, I was 25, and 10 000 km away from home and family. British Columbia was in the grip of its most severe winter in 70 years. My husband refused to work, and instead spent his days smoking marijuana, snowboarding, and playing. I worked for the first six and a half months of my pregnancy. I still wonder if it was partially the stress of this situation which triggered the... Read More

I had a what I thought was a normal pregnancy until I noticed that my blood pressure continued to rise at each of my OB checkups. I have always had normal blood pressure so this concerned me, especially since I am a registered nurse. My doctor kept reassuring me that this was somewhat normal, so I didn't worry. I was swelling so badly that I looked really puffy and I was extremely uncomfortable. The doctor's nurse would check my urine for protein, but there was never any to be found. I had high blood pressure and swelling, but was never told I had preeclampsia because I never had protein in my urine. I was really scared because I would read my nursing books about preeclampsia and... Read More

It is hard to say exactly when preeclampsia "started" for me, but I started to feel crummy around my 31st week of pregnancy. I started getting very itchy, particularly on my hands and feet and felt very very tired. I researched this on the internet and became convinced that I had cholestasis. My family physician who ordered liver tests that all came back normal. I was relieved, but was still convinced that something was not quite right.... Around this time my blood pressures started creeping up at my prenatel appointments. I was quite sure that this was due to the stress of mid/late pregnancy and the fact that I hadn't been feeling or sleeping very well. My fundal height was... Read More

First of all, I am so glad I started looking up information on the internet and found this site. This is great! There needs to be more public awareness. I first found out I was Pregnant from going to the emergency room for hives that had lasted two weeks. I itched all the way up to week 17. The next thing that happened was severe pain in my chest & back that was either my gall bladder or reflux, it was the latter. The next think was pre-labor contractions at about 28 weeks. They stopped the contractions and I went home and was put on partial bedrest. Throughout the next few weeks I was having a problem with the contractions and was put on full bedrest. Also, during this time I was... Read More

I had preeclampsia with my firstborn daughter. She is now thirteen years old. Three weeks before my due date, I was spending the weekend with my sister and remember being tired and irritable. After a hard and long car trip home, I saw the doctor the following morning. My base line bp had been 100/70. It was now 145/95. I did not and never did get protein in my urine. But, I was very grumpy, had woken up with a horrible headache, had hyperreflexia and pitting edema in my ankles shins, feet and lower abdomen. I was also having some visual disturbances. Well, I went home for bedrest. I had to go back every few days. Anyhow on Monday my b/p has shot up to 150/100 so my doctor... Read More

When I got pregnant my first time, I was only 18. I didn't know anything about childbirth or pregnancy and put all my faith in my doctor's hands. I felt that he was capable of taking care of me better than I was at taking care of myself. Unfortunately I wasn't completley right. A friend of mine gave me a book called "Your Pregnancy Week By Week" and in it I read all the way up til the last week. I found that around the 20th week there was an article describing the symptoms of preeclampsia. I noted the fact that I had been showing signs of the affliction early on in my pregnancy but my physician didn't think it was important enough to worry about. Two months passed and I was 6... At 18 i didnt know what was going on, i swelled up to double my size, couldnt get clothes on or shoes and i always felt tired. On my fortnightly visits to the doctors i told them (i had a different person each time) these problems and they took my blood pressure, it was ok, i was told it was just the heat of the summer. Twice this happend so 6 weeks later on my 3rd visit i told them my symtoms again, she took my blood pressure, felt my bump and monitered my babys heart beat then insisted we go staight to the hospital. At the hospital the monitered me for 24hrs but assured me nothing was wrong and that i would not need to have my baby untill the end of the week (this being on tuesday). On... Read More

I ignored the severe headaches that I was getting as just bad headaches. At 21 weeks I was admitted to hospital with blood pressure of 170/112. My Obstrician with the help of my husband monitored my blood pressure regularly. At week 24 I was admitted to hospital with a severe headache, blood pressure of 220/155 and kidney and liver failure. My blood platelet count dropped from 300 to 50 over a period of twelve hours. The result was our tiny baby been delivered at 24 weeks stillborn. It is ten days since our tragic day. Our baby was an IVF baby so very precious to us. Is there a chance of pre-eclamsia re-0ccurring.

I had been having severe swelling for several weeks, but my bp was normal until my 25th week when I had 120/90 bp and 3+ protein at my doctor's appointment on a Wednesday. My doctor told me she suspected something was going on with my placenta and she was concerned about preeclampsia. She asked me to begin monitoring my bp daily and to call her if it was over 140. She also ordered a 24-hour urine collection, which I was to do that following weekend. I didn't get the chance, though, because the next day my bp was 168/108 and she immediately admitted me to the hospital. I was in the early stages of labor (but didn't know it at the time) and having contractions. I... Read More

Posted On Friday, February 20, 2004 By

I developed pre-eclampsia with my 3rd pregnancy. It started with water retention and weight gain and elevated blood pressures. I was 31 weeks pregnant when my problems started. My doctor put me on bedrest and I checked my blood pressure often at home. She saw me about twice a week. I was on bedrest for four weeks and delivered my son, Jared, at 35 weeks 2 days. He was born on 12/26/00, just two minutes after Christmas. I was called in Christmas day to be induced because I was spilling protein (in my second 24 hour urine check). It was quite a lot, so my doc told me to come on down and that I would deliver that day or the next. I was put on magnesium sulfate (uncomfortable) and... Read More

I am just returning from the hospital where my baby girl died, and where I was also dying from HELLP Syndrome. I'd had a full anatomy sonogram and an ammnio and they told me the baby was healthy. I was sick for the entire pregnancy- throwing up quite a lot and had headaches most days-but was grateful the baby was doing well. My blood pressure was high so the doctor was treating me with a lot of Labatelol. I was going in weekly for blood pressure checks, which seemed to be unaffected by the high amounts of medication I was on, but we checked the baby with sonograms and she seemed do be doing just fine. In the 22nd week, I started to experience strong back and stomach pain,... Read More

My experience with preeclampsia occured with my first baby. My husband and I were so excited about the birth of our first child. I was 3 weeks from my due date , I had experienced a normal pregnancy up to that point. I started retaining water and had sweeling in my feet and hands, but it was August and hot so I did not think anythng much about it. My Doctors appointment was that week and I was to be examined and perhaps they could tell if I had stared the process for birth. My Doctor was out of town and instead I saw a nurse practioner. I asked her about the swelling and she said " I've seen worse"and said there was some protein in my urine. She said not to worry and to cut back on salt and... Read More

I became exhausted and experienced a burning pain under the rib cage at approximately 30+ weeks and was found to have elevated blood pressure and protein in the urine. My status went from bad to worse and it was determined that I would need to deliver within hours. Based on breech presentation, they decided to perform a C-section under general anesthesia. The baby was almost 4 weeks early, weighed 5 lbs 7 oz, and was diagnosed as well-premature. What the doctors did not know, however, was that the constant pain in my leg, believed to be pregnancy related leg cramps, was actually the result of a severely ruptured disk in my lower spine, which became worse after the C-section procedure,... My pregnancy started out pretty good. I had a bad time with morning sickness. My weight gain was good until I went to my 29 week checkup. My b/p was 195/120. I was sent to the hospital right then be assured by doctors that I was probably going to only have to spend the night and that everything would be fine. My regular doctor then showed up. (It was not my regular doctor that sent me to the hospital.) He told me that only if my condition got worse that they would have to send me to the hospital 1 hour away. That hospital speiaclized in "high risk" pregnancies. Only 2 hours after arriving at the local hospital I was being rushed by ambulance to the other hospital. I cried the entire way. I... Read More

At 32 years old, I finally got married and we decided to have a family right away. Thankfully, I got pregnant only after 2 months, and we anxiously waited for our baby boy's arrival. Although I had experienced edema and swelling early on, it became much more apparent at about 32 weeks. Thinking it was just the heat of the summer, I fought my husband in calling and seeing the doctor about it. He finally won the arguement, and at my appointment we discovered my blood pressure was elevated. Although the numbers were not that high to the average person, they were alarming for me with normally very low blood pressure. I was put on bed rest for about a week until it finally got to a...
