In May, 2003 I came home from work at the nursing home. I had a terrible headache and my feet were swollen bad. I new about PIH and toximea, because my family members have had it, and plus I'm a nurse. I checked my bloodpressure and it was higher than normal. I called my OBGYN, explained what was going on, he told me to come to the ER. by the time I got there, my BP was like 210/110. they were talking of taking the baby that night, but I was only 7 months into my pregnancy. A new OBGYN came in, because he was on call. I was on bedrest for the rest of my pregnancy (until june 11, 2003) they ending up taking my son a month early because of the uncontrollable BP and fluid. Well need... Read More

When I was 17 years old, I found out that I was pregnant. I was so scared, I did not even tell my parents - and during the course of my 9 month pregnancy, I gained little weight and did not show. Of course, I had no pre-natal care. One night in June of 1988 - when I was full term - I felt very ill. The next thing I remember, I was in the hospital. My father had heard my waterbed sloshing around - and when he came in my room, I was having seizures. He called the ambulance, and they flew me to the hospital. My blood pressure was 200/180 - the doctor had to induce labor, and imagine my parents' surprise when the doctors told them that I was 9 months pregnant - and that I probably would... Read More

My wife, Araceli, and I were High School Sweet hearts. We have been married for 4 1/2 years and together for 13 years. We were looking so forward to being parents. My wife went in for a doctor visit on her due date, March 25th 2003, and her blood pressure was higher then normal. She was a little swollen but not much. There was never any reason to worry. Since she was full term so they decided to induce. The delivery went great but her blood pressure was still high. After the delivery, her blood pressure drop to nothing. My wife was not able to stop bleeding. She died that same day. Thank God my daughter is healthy. I have lots of family helping me, but the pain I have... Read More

On Monday, April 29, 2002, I went to work as usual. I had my 30-week prenatal check-up at 11:30 that morning and when I left the office, I told my boss I'd be back in about an hour. I felt perfectly fine. My doctor weighed me, did all the normal tests, and everything was as usual (although I was upset at having gained 7 lbs in the two weeks since my last prenatal appointment, but my doctor didn't even mention my weight gain to me). We chit-chatted as she checked my blood pressure, but then her face changed. She checked my blood pressure again, and then again. She closed my chart, took off her stethoscope and said very hurriedly, "Okay... I'm sending you to the hospital RIGHT NOW." I... Read More

Posted On Friday, July 26, 2002 By Rebecca

I developed preeclampsia at 19 weeks w/my first pregnancy. I had twins w/one growth restricted by 3 weeks, she died in-utero at 23 weeks. I went on to have a placental abruption and emergency c-section at 27 weeks, and developed severe HELLP syndrome. My daughter, Aubrey Nicole, lived 15 days in the NICU.I never knew pregnancy could be so complicated. I was diagnosed w/twins at 19 weeks after my AFP came back elevated. My OB referred me to a perinatologist since one twin was 3 wks behind. Initially he thought I might have twin to twin transfusion syndrome and told me the small twin would probably die. She hung in there for a while and kept growing until about 23 weeks.Meanwhile I... Read More

I was 16 years old when I found out I was pregnant. My pregnancy went well until one evening, when I was 34 weeks pregnant, my upper back started hurting. My mom suggested that I take a warm bath. I did what she suggest but it still didnt work. The pain started to get worse, so she called my doctor and they told me to go straight to the hospital. When we got to the hospital the nurse took my blood pressure and she asked me did I have a history of high blood pressure, I told her no, and she called the doctor in the room. My blood pressure was very high, and thats when they took my urine in the cup to check for protein. Sure enough about 30 minutes later they told me I was diagnosed... Read More

Posted On Friday, November 12, 2004 By Summer

My pregnancy was far from good. I wasn't glowing or cute--mostly just swollen and sick and miserable. And tired. I threw up for seven months straight because the morning sickness never did fade. It'd be all worth it, I kept telling myself. Around my 29th week the swelling began. I had to have my wedding ring cut off my finger, because the swelling came on so quickly I didn't have time to really even notice. My legs and ankles followed--sometimes by the end of the day they'd be so swollen I could hardly walk. I work with nurses and they spent the days constantly poking at my painfully puffy legs, checking my blood pressure, and telling me to call my doctor. I did call the doctor,... Read More

I was only 19 years old when I had my first child (Kevin). The first 18 weeks of my pregnancy went without any problems. Kevin was growning fine and I was feeling good. My doctor and I started to notice my tummy wasn't getting any bigger and Kevin stopped growning at 21 weeks. My doctor wanted to keep a close eye on me because he also noticed some protein in my urine. I had appoinments with him every week. After my doctor realized what was going on, he sent me to San Jose Ca. to see a more qualified doctor. And that same day I was admitted to the hospital for treatment. At this point I knew something was wronge but I didn't know what because the doctors didn't want to tell me... Read More

Hi my name is Alicia. I am a mother of 3 children. When I was pregnant with my first daughter I had pre-eclampsia. The docter put me on some medication to help keep my blood pressure down. Since it did not help they induced me 2 weeks early. After a very long and hard labor my healthy little girl was born 6lbs 9 oz. Then about 2 years later I got pregnant for the second time. My blood pressure was fine through out the pregnancy. I had 1 month left to go and I became dehydrated. I spent the day at the doctors office and then at the hospital where they released me that evening. Well on my way home from the hospital my water broke and the next day I delivered a healthy baby boy, 6lbs... Read More

Hello~ My name is Annie. My preeclampsia occured with my first pregnancy. That was almost 24 yrs. ago. I truly believe that if my daughter weren't born and cared for where we were, she wouldn't be alive today. Things were so different then. She was born 9 weeks early, weighing 3 lbs. 5 oz. and 17 3/4 inches. She was in the NICU for 5 weeks and was able to come home at 4 lbs. 8 oz. I was so sick then. I was in the MICU for 13 days, before and after her birth. (MICU is the Mother's Intensive care unit) At 22 weeks pregnant, the drs told me that my blood pressure was elevated, very high, very quickly. I was still going for pre-natal visits once a month then, but that quickly... Read More

I went into premature labor on Christmas eve! I was hospitalized for two days. At this point my doctor put me on bed rest. My actual due date was february 14,1991. I actually made it to January 26 1991 by the grace of GOD! This is my story. I just found out yesterday March 15, 2004, just how blessed I really am. I was having discomfort in my right side and went to my general pratitioner, at wich point he ordered a ultrasound of my abdomin. They realized that I have kidney damage due to this condition eclampsia . I then began some research of my own and relived that horrific day. It began on 1/25/ 91. I went to my OB for my weekly check-up and she did a check where she had pressed... Read More

I woke up on May 12, 2002, at 4 am with incredible abdominal pain -- I figured it must be labor -- I was due May 20th and had just been put on "limited activity" two days before because my blood pressure had become "somewhat elevated" (121/90). Firstly, I had no idea of the severity of my condition. Secondly, although I had taken all of the pre-natal classes, the pain I felt seemed no worse that the description of "the worst pain you will ever feel" as had been described to me. My husband called my doctor (or rather, the doctor on call as it was a Sunday, Mother's Day), and he said to "come on in to get checked out". By the time I reached the maternity ward -- I was literally sprawled... Read More

At my 20 week level 2 ultrasound, my pregnancy was progressing as normal. I had a LOOP/LEEP procedure eight years before and I was being seen by my OB for measurements every two weeks. At 22 weeks, my blood pressure was elevated, but didn't seem to concern many. I was told to put my feet up and rest in the afternoons. I am a high school teacher, and this was a somewhat easy task. By week 24, my daughter was no longer growing, did not have enough weight to survive outside of the womb and my body was rapidly trying to reject my daughter. I was hospitalized and asked to perform a 24 hour urine collection. This was the second time I was aked to do this with low numbers (600mg) of protein... Read More

Where do I begin? Before I became pregnant, I weighed 110 lbs. From the beginning, I was very sick with severe nausea & vomitting and was given a prescription. The drug helped for a couple of weeks, but the nausea & vomitting returned. Still, I gained weight fairly rapidly. At six weeks, I had already gained 14 lbs, even without being able to keep foods down. During my 19 week check-up my blood pressure was 142/80. My blood pressure increased from there. When I went to my 24 week check-up, I weighed 147lbs. and my pressure was 170/90. I experienced blurred vision and headaches. By then, my ankles, feet, hands, and face were swollen & it was difficult to walk. I could no longer... Read More

In 1994, I was living in Philadelphia and pregnant with my first child. I was 25 years old and in relatively good health, having just served 4 years on active duty with the Army. I became pregnant and was due June 1995. My entire pregnancy was very normal. Weight gain, blood pressure, fetal size, etc was all within the normal ranges. Other than eating more than usual, I felt great and was excited to be a mom. I was treated for a urinary tract infection the end of April but my b/p and every thing else was normal. March 9, 1995 put an end to all my excitement. After not feeling ver well, having back pain and a bit of vomiting, I laid down to rest after a warm bath. When I awoke a few... Read More

I had Hellp in August, 2002. I had a normal, healthy pregancy all along. But at about 33 weeks, I began feeling indigestion, fatigue, and back pain- all normal end of pregnancy feelings, I assumed. I also had nosebleeds and bleeding gums. When I began to feel flu like symptoms, I called to ask for bloodword to be done. My father had been hospitalized at the time, and I assumed that I had caught something while visiting him. (I have since learned to assume nothing!!!) I went for bloodwork on a Monday, then to the dr's on Wednesday. The dr I saw said my white count was high, maybe I had an infection. She noticed my blood pressure was high and sent me to the... Incompetent Doctor I had a fairly uneventful 1st pregnancy I had gestational diabetes but was assured that it was nothing serious. So life went on normally until the last few weeks. At 34wks I noticed severe swelling in my lower extremities at my 35wk checkup I had gained 11pounds of water weight. I was having visual disturbances and headaches. My Dr. didn't seem concerned, he was too busy to deal with it then I supose. At my 36wk checkup my blood pressure was "slightly elevated" accourding to the nurse. I was still seeing spots, and had blurry vision in addition to a mild headache that wouldn't go away. My Dr. did not see me that week. At my 37wk checkup he finally admitted that... Read More
