Hello, I am writing to share my very scary experience with HELLP syndrome and offer support to anyone that needs it. Here goes... I started out with a very healthy and uneventful pregnancy. At approx. 19 weeks I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was completely shocked. My weight was normally 105 pounds, I exercised daily and ate healthy. However, I had it and had it bad. I started taking insulin shots immediately and had a very strict diet. I managed to keep my blood sugars... Read more

It has been 15 years since I gave birth to my daughter and I still get shivers every time I think about how close we came to dying. I didnt know anything about pre-eclampcia or eclampcia and how serious it is at the time of my pregnancy and today I still dont know if that was a bad thing. I was 33 years old and pregnant with my first child. The only warning that there may be something wrong was gestational diabetes, which I was controlling through diet. Everything was going well until ... Read more

I concieved my son on June 6, 2001. What a joy! I was considered to have a high risk pregnancy due to having ashma. I had great pre natal care and felt good throughout my first & second trimester. When it came to Chritmas 2001, I felt bad. I was advised this was normal pregnancy swelling. However at my 37 week check up (2/8/02) I was admitted into the hospital for observation. That is when "hell" was a place I felt I had experienced. 72 hours of it! I was finally induced at 5 AM on 2/11... Read more

Posted On Wednesday, February 26, 2003  by

I gave birth to my son on November 14 1997. During my pregnancy I gained 90lbs. I went from a size one my first trimester, to wearing my husband's 38/30 Levi's two days before delivery. I was on bed rest for four months b/c I was suffering from adema and my b/p was way above normal. This was supposed to be a happy time. It was my first child. But, instead of getting the nursery ready, and preparing everything for my new arrival I was flat on my back and 180 lbs, unable to function normally. I wa... Read more

My training as a Nursery Nurse saved my life and that of my baby. As part of our two year course, we had to visit a family. Christopher was two years old when I first met him. His mum had developed eclampsia at 30 weeks gestation. She was in a coma for 3 days and didn't even know that Christopher had been delivered until she saw his poloroid photo. I asked what her symptoms had been and all she was aware of was that she had swollen up a little bit in her face. When I was 30 weeks pregnan... Read more

I was having what I thought was a normal first pregnancy. In my second trimester

Posted On Saturday, February 15, 2003  by

I was having what I thought was a "normal" first pregnancy. In my second trimester I began having flu-like symptoms, bad headaches, and swelling. When I went to the dr for my 28th week apt. she said my bp was a "little high" but it was "nothing to worry about." The dr told me to "watch my sodium intake" and I should be "fine." A couple of weeks went by and I was feeling worse. Then, one night I woke up to go to the bathroom, looked in the mirror, and one of my eyes was completely swollen shut! I... Read more

I was pregnant with my first baby. I had had morning sickness ( although it was allday)everyday. It was right after Christmas and I went for my checkup and was told that I had developed an early stage of preeclampsia and that I needed to come back every week. My blood pressure kept rising in spite of at home bed rest (although I seemed to be stressed out due to different situations during this fragile time in my life) and large amounts of protein were present in my urine. I had to do the 24 h... Read more

I found out I was pregnant on February 22, 2001. This was our first child and we were thrilled. My pregnancy went normally at first...a little morning sickness and finally in my fourth month I felt good. We visited my husband's mom and dad on a Sunday and his sister and her daughter were there. While we were there our neice started throwing up, apparently with a virus. On Monday and all through the week I was having a little pain in the upper, right part of my stomach and my husband and I f... Read more

Posted On Wednesday, February 12, 2003  by

I was not enjoying pregnancy at all - morning, noon and night sickness and constant nausea meant I wasn't eating right for the pregnancy. My (now ex) husband wasnt supportive and I was studying full time via correspondancec and working too. We had relatives visiting for the week and I ran myself ragged around them. I believe that I am to blame for a lot of the complications of Jack's entrance into the world... At 28 weeks I decided to go to the chiropractor as the back pain I had became excru... Read more

I WAS EIGHTEEN WHEN I HAD MY SON BAILIE, VERY YOUNG AND NOT WELL AWARE OF WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH MY BODY! MY WHOLE PREGNANCY WENT FINE UP UNTIL THE 35TH WEEK IT STARTED OUT WITH SEVERE RIGHT UPPER QUADRENT PAIN, I INSTANTLY THOUGHT IT WAS MY GALLBLADDER! I DID'NT REALLY KNOW ANY BETTER. THE PAIN LASTED FOR HOURS BUT I WANTED TO WAIT UNTIL MY DOCTORS OFFICE OPENED UP SO THAT I COULD CALL AND ASK THEM WHAT WAS GOING ON! I STARTED VOMITING SEVERLY AFTER THAT AND THE PAIN JUST CONTINUED TO GET WO... Read more

Posted On Wednesday, February 05, 2003  by

I started to notice a great deal of swelling, headaches and fatigue a few weeks before I was officially diagnosed with severe Pre-Eclampsia. In fact, my husband and I joked about how I used to have ankles, which had somehow turned into tree trunks than ended in my overfilled shoes. It was on a routine 32-week check-up that I was diagnosed by my primary care doctor. She was chitchatting with my husband and I while taking my blood pressure, asking about baby names and things, when she sudde... Read more

Hi, my name is Lize and I live in South Africa. I have never even heard of Preeclampsia until a few weeks ago. My blood pressure was getting very high and my feet were very swollen. My husband then decided it was time to go to hospital. I thought I would be home by nightfall, but I was admitted and informed that I would stay there for at least 8 weeks. Sadly the hospital I was admitted to was very pathetic as far as caring for patients goes. They took blood pressure by placing their hands on my ... Read more

Posted On Tuesday, February 04, 2003  by

I am 23 years old and this was my first pregnancy. During the first 4 months of my pregnancy I suffered badly with morning sickness and lost a stone in weight. From 5 months, I began to enjoy being pregnant and I showed no sign of any medical complications. At 34 weeks I noticed that my ankles were starting to swell and my faced looked puffy. I was a bit concerned one night as my ankles were quite painful so my partner and I took a trip to the hospital where I was put under observation for an ho... Read more

I had the great fortune to have experienced four healthy, uneventful pregnancies by age 33. At 35, I became pregnant with my fifth child. My husband and I were thrilled! Almost from the day I discovered I was pregnant, however, I was worrisome about the health of my baby and the progress of my pregnancy. My doctor sent me for level two ultrasounds (with normal results), then to a counselor to gain control of my emotions. At 32 weeks, I began to experience the most severe abdominal pain I ... My name is Erica, and I want to share the story of my daughter's birth with you. I was 31 years old, and pregnant with our third child, we were very excited, and seemes to be having a perfect pregnancy, then the bottom fell out of the dream. The day before I was 33 weeks pregnant, i hadn't been feeling well, it was hot, I had a headache for about 4 days, that just wouldn't go away. That night my family talked me into going to the hospital to make sure nothing was wrong. Once I got there,... Read more

I am 36 weeks pregnant, and my doctor told me today that I had Toxemia, or Preeclampsia. I am also carring twins. My symptoms are swelling of my feet, headaches, abdominal pain, back pain, dizziness, I have no appitite, and having been able to urinate as much. My doctor didn't tell me much about the desease, infact he didnt tell me anything at all besides that I have it. He sent me down for an ultra-sound, and some blood work, and told me to come back Thursday. From what I read about this deseas... Read more

Hello, my name is Simone and I am 28 year old single mom. My son

Posted On Monday, January 27, 2003  by Sarah

Hello, my name is Simone and I am 28 year old single mom. My son is now eleven months old and was born on 02/27/02. He weighs about 24 lbs now. I mostly copied and pasted from my on-line journal located at www.thelaboroflove.com currently listed under parenting-single moms. It all started at my 34 week checkup. They checked my blood pressure, and it was high - about 160/95, when it had been running about 120/65. They had me relax a few minutes, but the lower number (diastolic?) didn't go d... Read more
