I am writing to share my very scary experience with HELLP syndrome and offer support to anyone that needs it. Here goes...

It has been 15 years since I gave birth to my daughter and I still get shivers every time I think about how close we came to dying. I didnt know anything about pre-eclampcia or eclampcia and how serious it is at the time of my pregnancy and today I still dont know if that was a bad thing.

I concieved my son on June 6, 2001. What a joy! I was considered to have a high risk pregnancy due to having ashma. I had great pre natal care and felt good throughout my first & second trimester. When it came to Chritmas 2001, I felt bad. I was advised this was normal pregnancy swelling. However at my 37 week check up (2/8/02) I was admitted into the hospital for observation. I gave birth to my son on November 14 1997. During my pregnancy I gained 90lbs. I went from a size one my first trimester, to wearing my husband's 38/30 Levi's two days before delivery. I was on bed rest for four months b/c I was suffering from adema and my b/p was way above normal. This was supposed to be a happy time. It was my first child. I was about 35 weeks when i found out i had preeclampisa i had never heard of it before that so i was very confused. my feet got so big just over night, and my blood preasure was very high. they sent me home on bed rest and told me to rest on my left side. my blood preasure got worst over the days so they put me in the hospitle so they could watch me carfully. my doctor told me if my blood preasure did not get better then he would have to take the baby out early. of course i was not happy a...

My training as a Nursery Nurse saved my life and that of my baby. As part of our two year course, we had to visit a family. Christopher was two years old when I first met him. His mum had developed eclampsia at 30 weeks gestation. She was in a coma for 3 days and didn't even know that Christopher had been delivered until she saw his poloroid photo. I was having what I thought was a "normal" first pregnancy. In my second trimester I began having flu-like symptoms, bad headaches, and swelling. When I went to the dr for my 28th week apt. she said my bp was a "little high" but it was "nothing to worry about." The dr told me to "watch my sodium intake" and I should be "fine." I started to notice a great deal of swelling, headaches and fatigue a few weeks before I was officially diagnosed with severe Pre-Eclampsia. In fact, my husband and I joked about how I used to have ankles, which had somehow turned into tree trunks than ended in my overfilled shoes.

Hi, my name is Lize and I live in South Africa. I have never even heard of Preeclampsia until a few weeks ago. My blood pressure was getting very high and my feet were very swollen. I had the great fortune to have experienced four healthy, uneventful pregnancies by age 33. At 35, I became pregnant with my fifth child. My husband and I were thrilled! I am 36 weeks pregnant, and my doctor told me today that I had Toxemia, or Preeclampsia. I am also carring twins. My symptoms are swelling of my feet, headaches, abdominal pain, back pain, dizziness, I have no appitite, and having been able to urinate as much.
