I was 29 years old and was pregnant with my first child a girl by the name of Rebekah Danielle Ulven. I had a easy pregnancy starting out never had any morning sickness on the third month I could no longer wear my wedding rings. I was being seen monthly and was having no problems until about the end of my fifth month, I started swelling and developed edema which later became severe preclampsia. I gained 63 pounds of fluid in my body over the three week period of my 5th month and 6 month. I went ...

It's so hard for me to write what I need to write. I am continually drawn back to this site to read stories from women who have shared in this horrible experience. Some days it seems unbearable. It's been almost three months since I walked in the Dr's office for what I thought was going to be a normal visit. It was anything but that. I knew the moment I stepped on the scale that something was wrong. I knew I had been swelling a bit, actually quite a bit. I figured it was normal. But I ha...

About a month before our first wedding
anniversary, my husband and I were overjoyed to
find we were expecting our first child. We had
experienced a miscarriage earlier that year, and
were cautiously optimistic about this pregnancy.
We decided to wait until I was 12 weeks to
announce the good news to our friends and family.
My pregnancy was rough from the start. The first
four months were constant morning sickness, and
I lost over ten pounds. At 20 weeks (on
Halloween!) w...

Hello! I tried to get pregnant for 3 years before, finally doing so in April of 2001. I had previously had laparotomy for ovarian tumors; laparoscopy for adhesions from that surgery; hysteroscopy for uterine growths and alot of tests. Well, that preg. ended in miscarriage. Luckily, 2 months later, I got pregnant again.
I had some nausea, but overall, a pretty easy first 6 months. Although, I did have severe carpal tunnel (pretty common in pregnancy). Slowly, I started to really swell. My sho...

My son James was my first pregnancy at age 31. I felt great during the first trimester with only a couple bouts of mild nausea, however, starting with the 4th month, I gained about 6-8 pounds per month (blamed it on increased calories!). I could not wear my rings my month 5 and started to notice swelling in my face by month 6. My blood pressure was slowing creeping up starting at month 5, but nothing really high. I also had so much swelling in my legs/feet that I went from shoe size 7 1/2 to...

To begin with, I had an awful pregnancy which I think was an indicator as to how my story was going to end.
I was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum at 9 weeks, and things went downhill from there. I was constantly sick and vomiting (upwards 15-20 times per day). I had to take prescription Zofran orally, and I.V. Zofran several times per week. At 21 weeks, I started having regular contractions from the constant dehydration. During all this time, I continued to work full time.
At 28 wee...

After reading much of the storys posted, I realize I was truly blessed!
When I was about 7 months pregnant, I started seeing spots or what looked liked fireflies flying around in my eyes. I thought it was strange and told my husband. He of course thought I was silly since I always seemed to worry about every little ache and pain during my pregnancy, so I kind of just forgot about it.
That month at my regular checkup the doctor said my blood preasure was elevated a little but he d...

I became pregnant at 22 years old. The first several months of my pregnancy were picture perfect. I had the usual symptoms, nothing alarming. At about 22 weeks, I had my first high BP reading in the doctor's office. The nurse asked me if I was nervous, and I said no. The exact same thing happened at my following appointment, a month later. Again, I was asked if I was nervous and I said no. At this time I was about 26 weeks along. I had began to have some mild swelling, but I had no prote...

I was 34 wks preg on 10/11/02. The previous week I had been put on bedrest since I was having high bp readings. I was doing ok at it, but i was difficult. I went to the dr on Tues 10/08/02 and she ordered some bloodwork and a 24 hr urine test. Blood work came back
fine, but urine test showed +3 protein. I went back into her office on Friday, the 11th at 2pm for a followup, when she revealed the results of the urine test and found that I still was having hbp
problems, and at that time had a b...

I am a 32 year old, healthy, fit woman who exercises, eats right and takes good care of myself. At 25 weeks I went to my doctor for a check up and was told my BP was high. She sent me to the hospital for a day of monitoring. I was then sent home as everything checked out.
I was put on moderate bedrest by my OB who thought that working from home with feet up in bed was ok. She sent me to a perinatologist who said the baby was small but he wasn't worried as my hsuband and I are on the short si...

Hi!
I got pregnant at the age of 20. During my 6th month of pregnancy, I started having contractions. I observed it happened every time I got tired. I didn't really discuss it with my OB/GYNE because it didn't happen often but I mentioned it to my husband's aunt who also happened to be a doctor. She advised me to stay in bed. But everything felt normal so I didn't listen to her advice and treated my infrequent contractions as normal.
When I was on my 8th month, I saw my doctor for my month...

Hello, my name is Simone and I am 27 year old single mom. My son is now eight months old and was born on 02/27/02. I mostly copied and pasted from my on-line journal located at www.thelaboroflove.com.
It all started at my 34 week checkup. They checked my blood pressure, and it was high - about 160/95, when it has been running about 120/65. They had me relax a few minutes, but the lower number (diastolic?) didn't go down. I ended up being in the office for 45 minutes, when I was usually t...

I am not sure why I am writing this other than you do not seem to hear from too many fathers.
I felt that it was important that I speak my mind for every other Father that does not.My wife and I lost our first child. He was born 15 weeks premature and was with us for about 39 hours.
My experience with preeclamsia began when our regular doctor visit became a living hell. We were sent to a hospital that did not deal with our type of sickness and were airlifted across town.I cannot speak for all,...

On January 31, 1998 I was hospitalized for
hypertension, I was approximately 27 weeks pregnant.
I was given medication while in the hospital to
maintain a somewhat normal blood pressure while
receiving steroid shots to help better develop by son's
lungs. I remained in the hospital until my son was
on February 23, 1998 (10 weeks premature). Thankfully,
my son was born without any major difficulties.
Unexpectedly, he did not need to have any oxygen, he
was breath...

This is an update to my previous story.
Shortly after I posted my previous story my condition worsened. My protein levels went up again and my blood pressure soared. I was sent straight to L&D from my doctor's office for complete monitoring and blood work. I was hooked up to an IV for fluids and medication to bring down my pressure.
My blood pressure did come down after two hours and my organs were still functioning properly. My doctor sent my home and told me to do a 24 hour urine catch s...

Hi, My name is Maddy. I had Preeclampsia, which led to Pulminary Edema.
I had gotten pregnant in october of 2001. This is our first child. I am an overweight woman to begin with and before I had gotten pregnant, I had asked my obgyn if it was ok for me and my child if I was to get pregnant weighing so much as I did. she had told me it has been done before, but I would have to be under a microscope with all my testings to see the baby more clearer.
Once I was pregnant, i had the typ...
