It was January 8th, 2001 when I went to the doctor, for a routine check up. I had been having headaches, and swelling for a few days, but I kept telling myself that it was normal since I was 36 weeks pregnant. I weighed in, and I had gained 10 pounds in 2 weeks. My doctor did seem somewhat worried, but didn't say anything yet. She took my blood pressure, then ordered me to go have blood work, and another urine test done. I thought it was funny tthat she was having me do blood work, but I went ahead and went to the lab, not knowing what was going on. I come back to the room, and my doctor walks in and tells me that I need to have my son within 24 hours, or there is a chance that we wouldn't... Read More

When I was 16 years old I had my first baby. I had been swollen

Posted On Thursday, April 14, 2005 By

When I was 16 years old I had my first baby. I had been swollen in my hands in face and legs for my second and third trimesters. But my doctor told me everything would be ok seeing as I was not spilling any protein into my urine and my blood pressure was normal. At my 36 week check-Up my doctor was surprised to see that my BP had risen to 150/100. And I was spilling protein. So he admitted me into the hospital. My doctor decided that it was in the best interest of my baby and myself if he were to go ahead and induce my labour. After 10 hours of labour the baby's heart rate dropped and was in distress so he put in an epidural and startedt wheeling me to the operating room when all of a... Read More

In October of 1999 I was 22 I was pregnant with my first child. Although I didn't know it at that time. I had noticed that I had been bleeding for 2 weeks straight. I called my OBGYN and they told me to come right in. When I came in they examined me and told me that I was pregnant and then was scheduled for a sonogram the following day. I went in for the sonogram and everything was fine. There was a heartbeat and the baby was developing normally. I had heavy bleeding every 2 weeks for 6 months. They never did tell me why I was bleeding. Later on I found out it was placenta previa. Other than the bleeding, my first 2 trimesters were uneventful. Not even high blood pressure. Then about 7... Hi my name is Jodele I am 26 years old. My husband and I have been together for 10 years. But we only were married in May 2004. Shortly after we married I started taking Clomid to get pregnant. My first cycle of pills did nothing. So my Doctor increased them the next month. So Istarted the next month of pills and my husband and I had are first night of trying to conceive. Two hours later my husband was asleep and I was reading a book. Suddenly my husband set up and then fell back down going into a Grande Mal Seizure. It lasted 3 min. I was frantic! I grabbed the phone and called 911. Off we went to the hospital... He was diagnosed with a Astrocytoma Lesion Grade II in his... Read More

Posted On Tuesday, May 17, 2005 By

My First born child was quite a life altering experience. In My first trimester I was always sick after eating. It got to the point of only holding down ice cream and raisinbran for 2months. I ended up losing 13 lbs. My dr. reassured me that this was normal and that I would gain it all back. At about 5 months I began to swell more and more each day, Ihad gained 60 lbs at this time, as well as the 13 I lost back. My ankles were so swollen by the end of each workday, that I would have to switch to slippers to walk out to my car. Once again my dr. said that my desk job was causing the water weight in the ankles. Then, at 5 months, I started having problems with the amniotic fluid... Read More

I was 23 weeks into my first pregnancy when I woke up in the middle

Posted On Sunday, May 08, 2005 By

I was 23 weeks into my first pregnancy when I woke up in the middle of the night with a burning pain under my ribs. I thought it was heartburn from a spicy stew I'd eaten for dinner. It seemed a little low for heartburn pain, but I'd never had it before so I thought maybe I just didn't really know what it was. It was too high for upset stomach pain. I called my doctor the next morning and described my symptoms. I was told that a stomach bug was going around so I should rest and stick to a liquid and/or BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet. As the day went on I felt like I was getting better, but that night the same burning pain woke me up. This went on for a week, and each day I... Read More

I was 23 when my husband and I found out we were pregnant in July of 2004. We were very excited when we found out but also at the same time extremely nervous. We had been pregnant earlier that year and had loss the baby to a miscarriage at 8 weeks, not finding out until 12 weeks that the babies' heart stopped beating at 8 weeks. Needless to say, we kept very quiet about this pregnancy, agreeing not to tell anyone until after our first appointment at 8 weeks. We had gone to our first doctor's appt and everything seemed to be great, we even were able to hear the babies' heart beat, which was a huge sigh of relief. We also got to have an ultra sound and we saw the heart beating. It was... Read More

On May 26, 2003, I got the shock of my life. Two purple lines showed up on a pregnancy test after being told that it was unlikely that Id ever have children. I went to the OB and found out my due date was January 26, 2004. Morning sickness rather, all day sickness - plagued me until about 17 weeks, and thankfully, it subsided. Other than not being able to take all of my pre-natal vitamins due to morning sickness, I did everything right. I stayed away from caffeine, I got plenty of sleep, I ate right, I exercised when I felt OK, and I went to all of my OB appointments. I thought everything would go smoothly. Ive never been more wrong about anything in my life. In my 31st week... Read More

My two preemie daughters Marcie Jo When I finally found out I was pregnant with my first child I was almost three months pregnant. I was having headaches by then, but my doctor thought it was a vision problem so he had me sent me to see an optometrist, who told me I had 20/20 vision. By my fourth month I had gained 25 pounds and my ankles were swollen. I told my doctor, who said, Thats what happens when you get pregnant. By my fifth month I had gained 50 pounds and we had started to attend our Lamaze classes. In my sixth month, I had gained a total of 75 pounds; my doctor thought I was eating too much, so he sent me to a dietitian. It was Thursday night November 5, 1992,... Read More

Only two months after getting married in October 1998, I found out I was pregnant! We assumed it would take a while and were shocked by the news, but incredibly happy. I was 25 years old. Like a lot of the other stories here, I had an uneventful beginning to my pregnancy. No morning sickness at all. Around 24 weeks my in-laws came to visit, we decided to go into DC and check out the Cherry Blossoms. It was an extremely warm day and I felt very sick. My feet and hands were all bloated, I was having trouble breathing and I was SO hot. We all assumed that the warm day and too much walking were taking it's toll because I was pregnant. That these were 'normal' symptoms. Little did I know... Read More

Hello! My name is Jennifer and I wanted to share my experience with preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome with you&& Back in 2002 my first pregnancy was going smoothly until my 32nd wk when I developed unexplained pre-term labor. I had noticed a small amount of spotting and immediately contacted my OBGYN. I was admitted and surprised to find that I was having contractions even though I was unable to feel them. After several days in the hospital on Mg Sulfate I was discharged to home on bed rest. Around 33 wks I started to develop some mild achy type pain on my right upper side of my abdomen just below my rib cage. Of course I didnt really think much about it. I thought it might... Read More

My Story My husband and I were very excited to finally be "pregnant". We had tried for a while to conceive and before this had had a miscarriage. We prayed daily for our child. Praying that he would be healthy; fearful of God; and of great positive impact to our society. Everything seemed to be going ok. I was often tired and voraciously hungry. On week 17 they did the alpha protein screener on me and it came back abnormal for neural tubal defects. They checked the baby via ultra sound and found everything to be ok. I went back for a repeat visit and was told that everything looked fine. The doctor did mention that she was worried for me about... Read More

My name is Jennifer and me and my doughter almost died because of preeclampsia. She was delivered 10 days before her due date by c-section.After she was delivered the NICU doctor told us she stoped growing 3 weeks before she was due. I had to be on magnesium and BP meds to bring my BP down ever after delivery. My doughter had to stat in the NICU for 4 days because she was not breathing when she was born and had had a BM while I was in labor. I was in or recovery for 4 hours while they were trying to stabilize me and I was in such bad shape that the had to put me to sleep and I don't remember much more other than at 8:00 the next morning being taken to see my beautiful baby girl. She weighed... Read More

My name is Brook and my daughter's name is Madelynn Hope. This is our pregnancy story. My pregnancy was wonderful at first. I had no morning sickness or other ailments. My doctors told me I was having a textbook pregnancy. At around 27 weeks, I started having pain in my upper right abdomen. I brought it up to my doctor who told me it could be my liver. He felt around and said it didn't feel enlarged, so I would be fine. At 29 weeks, I had a mild placental abruption along with contractions. They put me on Terbutaline to stop the contractions and sent me home on semi-bedrest. Two weeks later, I went in for a follow-up ultrasound. They found out I was contracting every 4-5... Read More

April 27th,I was just going in for my last routine visit with my OBGYN before moving the next day. As the nurse was writing down my blood pressure she asked me how my head-ache was. I was shocked that she knew I had this head-ache. She lied me down on my left side and turned down the lights and said "just rest while I get the doctor." The Doctor came in and checked my blood pressure three more times before he told me that I would not be leaving Rochester until I had this baby. What I had was called preeclampsia and that I was to head to the hospital and was not to worry. He also didn't really wanting me to drive my self there even though it was 2 blocks away. But he sent me on my... Read More

I am sharing this story today with everyone in order to come to terms with what happened 7 years ago. Until recently, I did not deal with these feelings I experienced back then, mostly because I did not feel I had the time with a new baby, but most likely because it was too frightening to do so. I am considering having another child, but have been forced back to deal with the experience I had back then in order to move forward now,if possible. My pregnancy seemed normal up until the last trimester. Towards the end, I began to "swell" everywhere - I could not wear my shoes even. I was rather active though, and ice skated up until the very end. I am also an RN but obstetrics is not my... Read More
