On the evening of Saturday, April 1st, I began to feel severe back pain and was burning up.  For several weeks my feet, ankles and hands were swollen, but since there was nothing else wrong my OB was not concerned, so neither was I.During an all-day meeting on Tuesday, April 4th I started to feel the back pain again.  It was assumed by many and I that it could be the... Posted On Friday, October 06, 2006 By Rishika

In October 2001 I was admitted to hospital after experiencing severe pains in my abdominal area. My hands, face, feet and ankles were swollen up to 4 times its normal size. My blood pressure was extremely high and there was a high level of protein in my urine. After having blood tests done it was found out that my platelets were at an extremely low level of 81. I was diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia at 19 weeks of pregnancy. At that time I knew nothing about this condition and I was told that I was too early in my pregnancy for my baby to survive outside my womb. I was advised to have a termination of pregnancy. My baby was born at 19 weeks of pregnancy, weighed 450 grams and being of... Read More

I was 34 1/2 weeks pregnant when I woke up with bad pain in the lower half of my body. I had felt this pain before and went to the hospital and was told to just go home , relax and take a tylenol, so this time I didn't even go to the hospital, I just relaxed until it got so bad I took a tylenol. After taking the tylenol I went to take a warm shower to ease the pain, and that is when I started bleeding badly. I called for my husband to take me to the hospital. The whole way to the hospital I just kept bleeding. As soon as I got to the hospital they starting searching for a heart beat and there was no sound. I knew something was wrong when I didn't hear... Posted On Monday, October 09, 2006 By

I was expecting my first baby in October 2004. My husband and I were very excited, and every day checked for an expectant 'bump.' As my pregnancy progressed, I always measured 'small for dates', but my midwife wasn't concerned. After about 20 weeks, I started to put on a lot of weight. My face was so swollen, I looked completely different to before I fell pregnant. My hands and feet were swollen, and not many of my maternity clothes fitted. At around 27 weeks, my dad took my blood pressure for me one morning. It was staggering, and my dad sent me straight to the hospital. As I waiting in ante natal clinic, I thought my... Read More

Posted On Wednesday, October 18, 2006 By

I was 30 weeks pregnant when my problems with high-blood pressure began. I went to the office for a routine visit, had my blood-pressure taken as usual, but the nurse didn't repeat it as she usually had before. I asked her what it was and she replied, 148/85, which was high for me. Pre-pregnancy, I was around 115/70. I had been suffering from significant swelling in my hands and face for about 4-8 weeks before this. The doctor was concerned and ordered me to watch my sodium intake, drink lots of water, and try to stay off my feet and keep them elevated as much as possible. The only symptom of pre-eclampsia I didn't have was protein in my urine.Although, I was never told... Read More

I had my stillborn at August 29,2006 at 7:44 in the morning.I didnt know I had preeclampsia. I told my doctor everything I was feeling, blurry vision, nauseous, dizzy, I also had early contractions. They didnt do a thing, they just told me that everything was ok, but i knew otherwise.i also had bad headaches, swollen hands, feet, and face. My blood pressure was always a little high but the doctors never did a thing. One night I didnt feel my baby move at all, then around 3am i started to bleed and my boyfriend call 911. When we got there they hooked me up to the fetal monitor, but they didnt hear the heartbeat. Then they hooked me up to the ultrasound and told me that the baby was... Read More

Posted On Wednesday, October 18, 2006 By

On February 22nd 2004, my 34th week in pregnancy and the day of my baby shower, I woke up with excruciating pain on the right side of my stomach area.  It was so bad, that I told my husband I would need to miss my shower and asked him to take me to the hospital.  From the time I arrived at the hospital, I was put on pain medication.  I begged to see my doctor, but it was the weekend so I only saw the doctor on call. The pain was so intense I threw up many times.  I did not sleep for 2 nights.  My husband wasn't even allowed to stay overnight with me since I wasn't technically in labor. I felt scared and alone. I started swelling even more by the second day... I was just 17 when I found out that I was pregnant for the first time. Illnesses such as preeclampsia never even crossed my mind, like everyone else i thought I was going to have a perfect pregnancy and a perfect baby at the end of it. I was partially right. The pregnancy was fine I felt fantastic in myself and was told the baby was growing healthily from the onset. My only worry was the amount of weight that I was gaining. I am just over 5ft tall and was a petite size 8 beore getting pregnant. By the time I had reached 30 weeks I was a size 14 - 16. My midwife told me I was just retaining a lot of water (at the time I had know idea that this was actually one of the first signs of... Read More

Posted On Thursday, June 16, 2005 By

I am a first time mom of 10 month old twins. I found out i was having twins when i was 9 1/2 weeks along. I was shocked because twins didn't run in my family. I was only 21 at the time and didn't know what to do. Everything was going along fine in my pregnancy and i was going to my monthly appointments. I was working 40 hours a week, and was on my feet constantly. My feet started swelling around 27 weeks, at first it wasn't bad, about 3 days later it started getting to where it hurt for me to walk. I would prop my feet up all day and night on my days off and it wouldn't change a bit. At my 28 1/2 week appointment everything checked o.k. Over the weekend my swelling increased and... Read More

Friday, September 1998. I am 36 weeks pregnant with my son. My urine has evidence of protein and my blood pressure is elevated. I am told to go to the hospital across the street from my doctors' office. I go to the LDR and the nurses hook me up to machines and I have to pee in a bucket. My blood is drawn and tested. After six hours, I am stabilized and sent home with orders of bed rest for the weekend. I return the following Monday to the doctor's office and they tell me I am having my baby. I go back to the hospital and get hooked up again to machines, and the nurses induce my labor. I had my son 12 hours later at 37 weeks gestation. However, he did not come out screaming and he was a... Read More

Posted On Monday, June 20, 2005 By Geneva

I flew home to NY for Thanksgiving and was 31 weeks into my first pregnancy. When I arrived I noticed severe swelling in my feet and legs that I hadn't had before. I couldn't put my shoes on once I had them off and it was actually grotesque. Elevating my legs helped only a little bit. The next morning was the same thing. I blamed it on the flight and stress- my mom insisted I go to the ER to make sure it wasn't more serious. I was seen at the hospital and they found no other indications of a problem. My blood pressure was fine and there was no protein in my urine. The Dr. suggested the swelling could be from the high sodium holiday meal and prescribed a diuretic. The diuretic didn't... Read More

Hi! Well I hope by telling this story it will help first time mothers to be more aware of the dangers of this condition. I didn't even know what preeclampsia was and had read every pregnancy book imagineable. I was in my 30th week of pregnancy when the swelling in my feet began, it wasn't until the 31st week that I started to vomit and my face started to swell. I had talked to my sister-in-law, who was also pregnant, and told her of the swelling, and this is when she informed me to check my blood pressure. I went to the local pharmacy the next day to check it, and it was very high. I then called my OBGYN who had me come in right away. She confirmed the high blood pressure and then sent me... Read More

After having a miscarraige in 1999 and falling pregnant again in 2000, my obstetrician decided to do extensive tests due to my previous loss and complaints of poor circulation and joint pain which was an ongoing occurence! The result was Antiphosphilipid syndrome and i was advised to commence Aspirin 75mgs per day!The baby appeared to be fine but at 33weeks pregnant i began to display all the symptoms of pre-eclampsia and very quickly became very unwell. Despite efforts to lower my blood pressure, this condition only resolves with the delivery of baby and placenta and at 34 weeks my 4lb 15oz son was delivered by caesarean section. thankfully he was fine though it took 48hrs to stabilise my... I was 26 years old, in good health and was so fortunate to have a very easy pregancy. Things started to go wrong during Thanksgiving week 2004. I thought I was having contractions in my back so I called my doctor. She recommended that I go to the hospital just to be checked. When I arrived, I was put on the monitors and my urine and blood pressure were checked. My blood pressure was high, but they were able to get it down when I layed on my side. There was also trace amounts of protein in my urine. After monitoring me for a few hours, they sent me home and told me not to worry. They told me I didn't need to be seen until my next scheduled appt., and that it would be fine if I... Read More

Posted On Monday, February 23, 2004 By Deborah

Hello My son was born at 31 weeks. Weighed 2 lbs 5 oz. 14 inches long. A little bit longer than a credit card size. It took me awhile to figure out what happened. I was dealing with my own self doubts and issues before I was able to realize what happened. I was blaming myself for having a premature child. How could I be so aweful to my son. That's what I was thinking to myself. Then around 9 month later, I started to listen to my husband, my friends and people who care about me and doctors explanation of what happened. The doctor who gave me a c-section explained to me what happened. He made me listen and told face to face, this was not your fault. It was not because I am... Read More

My pregnancy was going really well at first. I was gaining weight and my blood pressure was fine. At twenty nine weeks I started swelling in my ankles and my face. I didn't think nothing of it I just thought it was because I was pregnant. I had a headache really bad for two days so I decided to go to the hospital. I went to the E.R. and found out I had preeclampsia. My blood pressure was extremely. I was put on magnesium and sent to another hospital thirty five miles away. As soon as I got there they did a ultrasound to make sure baby was ok. I was so sick and I felt like I was burning up. My blood was tooken every hour. I was so out of it and barely knew what was going on. The doctors... Read More
