My pregnancy was great. Very little sickness and no complications, until......33 weeks. I went to my doctor for a checkup due to excessive swelling, weight gain, and overall feeling of something wrong, which began in my 32nd week. After taking my BP and urine, I was sent home on bedrest and ordered to complete a 24 hour urine test. I went back 2 days later for the results. The doctor told me that protein was in my urine and I needed to go directly to the hospital. I didnt know what to do. I wasnt prepared for this news. I had NO travel bag, nothing for the baby..and they expected my BP to go down?! I was admitted for a few days, I was put on Magnesium Sulfate and everything is a blur... Read More

I suffered from pre-eclampsia 8 days postpartum. I did not know what was going on. I had just had a c-section and my daughter was in the icu. I was on my way to the hospital to see my daughter, and stopped by my doctor to have my incision checked due to discharge, and as a routine they check your BP, well it was very high and elevating by the minute. I was sent to the L&D floor and was immed. put on magnesium for 24 hours. This was the most horrible day of my life my newborn was in the icu, they were taping pillows and blankets around the bed (in case seizure occured). I am glad that i am here to be able to tell my story so maybe it can help someone. Please if you have any symptoms... Read More

Hello, My name is Jennifer and I would like to share Jacob's story with you. After two years of trying to get pregnant, on October 11, 2001 my husband and I found out that we were expecting. We were overjoyed! My due date was June 11, 2002. My pregnancy was normal until my 32 week. I noticed, after participating in a friends wedding, that my feet were very swollen. A week later at my doctors appointment my blood pressure was slightly elevated (141/90). The nurse had me lay on my left side and they took again. I came down slightly, but not to my normal 120/80. They wanted to see me again in a couple of days. For the next couple of weeks by pressure remained slightly elevated. ... Read More

I was 34 weeks and 4 days pregnant when I went to one of my doctor's appointments. I had felt really bad the weekend prior to this Monday appointment. I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong, but I didn't think my health or my baby's health was in any danger. I felt like I weighed a million pounds and I had no energy. I just chalked it up to what I thought was what the last trimester would feel like. (this was my first pregnancy). At the doctor's office, to my surprise, I had gained 12 pounds in two weeks and my blood pressure was high ( I don't remember exact, but it was 150 something over the bottom number I don't remember), Irregardless, I hadn't had any high blood pressure... I started developing preeclamsia at the beginning of my 3rd trimester during my first pregnancy

Posted On Tuesday, July 15, 2003 By Jennifer

I started developing preeclamsia at the beginning of my 3rd trimester during my first pregnancy with my son. The doctor came in at the beginning of the 3rd tri and told me that I had had a small amount of protein in my urine and my blood pressure was elevated but not high. He said that it was not a lot but we would see what the next sample showed. I did not have any more protein show up nor did I have elevated blood pressure until my last appointment before having my son. This last appointment was two days after his due date. The doctor came in and told me that my blood pressure was high and that I had more protein then I had three months earlier in my urine. He said that I... Read More

Our second pregnancy began with great joy, hope, and not a small amount of trepidation. After Nicolas's birth at 28 weeks due to seizures resulting from undiagnosed preeclampsia, we were fearful that another micropreemie was in our future. I saw my OB just a couple of weeks into my pregnancy, and he outlined our "game plan." Beginning at 24 weeks, he would be seeing me weekly in his office, and he warned me that bedrest was a probability, so to prepare myself emotionally and financially for it. He seemed to think that hospital bedrest would be a likely scenario, as well. Well, 24 weeks came and went with no indication of heightened blood pressure, as did 28! The only issues to date... I was pregnant with my first child. I started having problems with swelling and kidney/bladder infections quite early on. I was due on Valentine's Day of 2002. Right after Thanksgiving, I went for my checkup and my blood pressure was way higher than last time so I had to go for a checkup each week. On January 9, one of my feet got so swollen it was like butter. You could mash it and make an indention. I called the hospital and the doctor told me that if I felt the baby move 10 times or more in an hour then to come first thing the next morning. I headed off to the doctor the next morning, not expecting to be put in the hospital. The nurse took my blood pressure and it was... Read More

My pregnancy had thus far been easy. I had none of the usual unpleasant symptoms of being pregnant. At 20 weeks, we found out we were having a boy!! We were so excited!! Then the whole world seemed to cave in. At 24 weeks, I was tested for gestational diabetes. My results were borderline positive. I was placed on a STRICT diet and had to check my blood sugar at least 3 times a day. At 28 weeks, my blood pressure started to rise. I was told to limit my activities and come in to have myself checked 2 times a week. By 30 weeks,I had already been in the hospital for monitering and blood work once, and then I was placed on complete bed rest. I was still going into the doctor's office... Read More

I am telling my story of PIH. I live in Aurora. I have 2 gorgeous boys. One 5 the other 4. It took me 7 years of trying, to conceive my first baby. Finally, when I was 28 we had completely given up and surprise I was pregnant. I had never felt better during that pregnancy. At my dr visit during my 7th month my doctor my blood pressure had risen and my uterus didn't grow as it should. She sent me to a perionatoligist who monitored me 2x wkly for the remainder of the pregnancy. At 34 weeks the baby was under distress and the decided to take him by emergency c-section at St Jos hospital. He was only 3lbs 4oz, but in every way perfect. He stayed in the NICU there for 10 days. ... Read More

I have been coming to the Preeclampsia Foundation for over 2 years now, and have finally decided to write my story. My pregnancy began in July of 2002. My first doctor's appointment was on September 11th. I can still remember how excited I was to be sitting in an OB's waiting room full of expectant mothers. My first appointments were all wonderful. Blood pressure was great, no protein, no weight gain, no complaints. Then I went in on my 29 week appointment. I had mentioned to the doctor about my swelling, but he said it was no big deal. This appointment, though, I had gained 10 pounds in two weeks. My blood pressure was 140/88. They sent me home that day with a 24 hour urine. ... Read More

I knew I was a high risk pregnancy to begin with. I had suffered 2 miscarriages before, which were caused by a condition I have called, Antiphosphilipid Syndrome. Before I even became pregnant this time, I started taking heparin injections along with 81mg of baby aspirin a day. I thought as long as I did this everything would be fine. I knew the previous miscarriages were caused because, I was not on these medications before becoming pregnant the last 2 times. Everything seemed to be going fine. At about 18 weeks, they told me the baby's growth was a little off, which could possibly be caused by IUGR. They said they would watch that, and left it at that. At 21 weeks, I started to feel my... I am 34 years old and my husband and I had not planned to have children - but had always said "if it happens - that's ok too". I had been told since I was 22 that I would probably not be able to have children and that if I wanted to try would need fertility treatments. Here we were using birth control and found out we were pregnant! We were shocked but excited. I never knew I wanted to be someones mommy until I was going to be. I have a history of high blood pressure and was on atenalol. My OB referred me to a perinatologist at week 13 as she wasn't sure if she should keep the meds the same or change them. The "peri" FREAKED OUT and shook his papers and ran out of his office to... Read More

My name is Amy, I was 27 years old when I delivered my son Noah, who is a heathly 4 years old now. I found out I had pre-eclampsia when I was 32 weeks pregnant, At that time I had no symptoms other than protein in my urine. My OB ordered me to have 2 non-stress test a week and see him once a week, so I was being monitored 3 times a week. Each office visit he would check my pressure and also test my reflexes, which as the time I had no idea why. I really had little swelling until 36 weeks, that's when all went down hill FAST. That week I was swollen, headaches, blurred vision and when my OB test my reflexes my leg went flying into the air!!!! Not to mention my blood pressure was thru the... Read More

I'am a young mother, I was 17 at the time of my sons birth. October 18th I felt what I believed to be contractions. So at 4 am I got up and monitored how far apart my contractions were, they were about 20-30 minutes. I stayed at home until about noon. and decided to go into the hospital. The hospital finally admited me at 5 pm. At this pointe I believed I could have a normal child birth but later that night the pain worsened and I was given a epideral and the hospital enduced me. The doctor came into the room and enformed me we would need to have a c-section because my labor was not progressing. I had a healthy baby boy, 5 pounds. Later that evening my blood pressure kept kising and I... Read More

Like many of the other people who have stories on this page, I never thought that I could have an unhealthy preganancy. I was totally unprepared for what happened. I felt exhausted all through my first tri-mester, felt naseous, but never vomited, and lost 6 pounds. My OB and I had agreed that since I started out at a higher than ideal weight, it was ok for me to gain only 15 lbs altogether during the pregnancy, and we were on target! In my second tri-mester I started vomiting every day, and my feet started to swell, but my OB was not alarmed, she simply kept on top of it. My blood pressure was a perfect 110/60 for my entire pregnancy, and the only issue was possible low birth weight. Around... Read More

In late November of 1999 I impatiently hovered over an EPT stick which ultimately announced, to my surprise, that I was going to be a mother. Estatic, I ran to my husband, who was still asleep in bed and shared the good news. The first 5 months of pregnancy went by rather uneventful and normal. At my 22 week check-up I went into the lab for an ultrasound. I found out that we were right on schedule and that I was having a son! After the highs of seeing my little guy on the ultrasound screne I was scheduled for the normal monthly checkup, however it turned out to be the start of something I pray I never experience again. I was weighed and I had gained 8 pounds in one month (Up to... Read More
