Hello my name is Christina and at the time of my pregnancy March 2004 I was 31yrs old. As soon as I missed my first period we took a home test. When it was positive we immediately made an appointment with my OBGYN they confirmed I was 7 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I did the little survey on Family medical history. Im normally very healthy and my only on going medical issues have been terrible allergies. So when they found out that my sister and several other family members had diabetes they checked me for it. I didnt have it then but said they would re check me again at 28 weeks. I never developed it. The begging of my pregnancy started out normal. I only had very little... Read More

Karen's story for Preeclampsia Foundation My wife Karen Sclafani, an incredibly vibrant, healthy woman, died from hemorrhaging shortly after the Feb. 5, 2004 birth of our first baby, a healthy 5 pound, 15 ounce, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital in Montana. Karen was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia Feb. 4, four days before our due date. This condition, along with placenta acreta, was the main factor that triggered a cascade of post-delivery complications that culminated in sudden and catastrophic bleeding from her uterus immediately after surgery to remove the placenta. She was 37. Karen's grandmother, an Italian immigrant living in the Bronx, died in 1932 in the same... Read More

My first pregnancy started out wonderful. I was 24 years old and felt great. Around 29 weeks I started feeling kind of strange--nothing specific, just not quite right. I called my doctor's office and went in to be checked. My doctor was out of town and his partner didn't find it necessary to see me. The nurse weighed me and checked my blood pressure. It was slightly elevated, but she attributed this to my not feeling well. I was sent home with instructions to take it easy for the rest of the week at home. I already had a regular appointment scheduled for the next week. The next few days were spent waiting and wondering what was really going on--I continued calling my ob's office... Read More

I am so happy to have found a website to share my story. My husband and I have been married for 6 years. I delivered a healthy baby girl at 39 weeks in August 2002, Emily Grace. Moving on to my second pregnancy-----things were progressing nicely until about 33 weeks gestation. My husband who is in the army was deployed to Iraq in January 2005. Our second daughter's due date was March 22, 2005. I started not feeling well and went to my OB appt. My blood pressure was elevated to 150/90.....which was high for me since my BP always ranged 100/60. I told my doctor my concerns that I was developing preeclampsia. (I am a RN and knew a little about the signs and symptoms) He didn't... Read More

I am 42 years old and have a 18 year old, 15 year old and a 6 month old. It never occurred to me that I could be pregnant at my age. My oldest was getting ready to graduate from High School and this just could not be. I thought that I was beginning Menopause. There was no morning sickness, I had not really gained very much wait, and as it was my periods had become less & less. Well needless to say it was not Menopause. I began having some swelling in my hands, feet and face. I had never had high BP but thought I would check it just to see what it was. Well it was extremely high, probably in the range of 190/120 give or take. This went on for a couple of weeks. After doing some... Read More

I was admitted to hospital last thursday with severe acute pre-eclampsia. It began after a week or two of just not feeling right. I was swollen and tired and irritable, and I had vomited a couple of times and I had been seeing stars. I also had not felt much foetal movement for about two weeks. Even though I was convincing myself that everything was fine, something told me that it wasn't. At my last pre-natal check, the baby had measured slightly small for his gestation. He was still within normal range, but I had noticed that his activity had become less obvious. I was not feeling 'kicks' anymore, just gentler movements and I was silently worrying that all was not right. I kept prodding my... Read More

First of all, I have to say that I first heard about pre-e on, of all things, the television show "ER" about 10 years ago. I remember thinking as I was watching the episode how horrible this disease was, and from that moment on, whenever I thought about having a baby, pre-e was always in the back of my mind. So, the short form is, I developed it at about 26 weeks. I remember that I went to work one day, and my fingers on my right hand were all numb. I had been swelling a lot - but it was hot outside (June) and my mother was telling me that swelling was normal. Just to be safe, I called my OB, and they made me come in for a BP check. I don't recall the reading, but it was high, and my... Read More

Hello, I am the mother of 4 children. My last baby was certainly the hardest on my body and his. My mother had died May 17,1997 and on June 17th we found out a baby was on its way. A bit of a surprise but never the less loved. I craved CHEESE and I could not get enough of it. In my last 2 months of pregnancy. I had gained 41lbs and with all my other babies only 25lbs, I felt swollen and I had this DULL headache that would not go away. My husband said I started to not make sense. We had figured the stress of loosing my mom and my dad was dying and did die 3 weeks before my baby was born. The routine check ups kept saying my blood pressure was up and I was showing protein in my... Read More

I'm 23 years old, and I'm living with the effects of preeclampsia everyday. On July 15, 2005, I went to the hospital with blood pressure of 210/140. My kidneys and liver had shut down. I was told that I had preeclampsia and I was sent to a medical university that specialize in emergency deliveries with a level 3 baby unit. I didn't have a clue what was going on. I was scared for my baby and all I could think about was that we were going to die. I had been to the doctor one week before because of swelling that was so bad I couldn't find shoes to wear. I was sent home with the understanding that everything was fine and that it was normal to have swelling at 30 weeks. I was 283 lbs when I... Read More

My Daughter developed pre-eclampsia at 38 weeks. Sudden onset, BP was 196/110 at Dr's appt. Baby was delivered that day. He aspirated on amniotic fluid and required 10 day stay in NICU. My daughters recovery seemed slower than usual with constant headaches. 4 weeks later she was rushed to emergency room in severe pain in right side and fever of 104. I will try to condense what happened next. After every test you could think of, they found that she had a severe kidney infection. She was not responding to antibiotics. Her BP was now 70/40. It would then shoot back up to the 190's/110's then drop again. As a result of some of the blood work it was found that her Adrenal Gland was not working... Read More

I was admitted to hospital and put on 24hrs monitoring in the hope to prelong my pregnancy. Nothing was working and then I started to get confused, flashing lights infront of my eyes and the baby was distressed. Time to be born. Molly Alice was born 7.22pm weighing 1lb 6oz, 29th April 1992.She lived for 23days,at first doing well, breathed for herself. Then infection set in and she was gone. The ventilator was taken... My name is Ashley I am 23 and I live in Florida. Around my 24 week in pregancy I was sent to meteranl fetal medicene due to a ultrasound that showed a thick skin on my babys neck, which the doctors said could be a sign of down syndrome. I was devistated, but this attention to my pregancy proved to save my baby and me.The maternal fetal medicene Dr. had told me to stop working and do very little else, due to my blood pressure but I was not on complete bed rest. That weekend I checked my blood pressure at a store it was very high. I went to the hospital and was monitered and sent home becasue it was going down with rest. I was going to my regular Dr. one day a couple days later around my 28... Read More

At 22 I was married and looking forward to the birth of my first child. On the day of my sons birth my mother and I made several trips to the hospital. On the last trip to the hospital I was in so much pain, that I could not sit down in the seat of the car. All I can remember about the day is that I was in so much pain. When we arrived at the hospital instead of going back through the ER, my mother seeing that I was in alot of pain, took me straight upstairs and straight through the deliverly room doors. She explained to the doctor on call that the pain I was experiencing were the same symptoms that she had suffered from when she lost her baby. He examined me instantly and found that... Read More

I was pregnant with my first child at age 38 following a miscarriage 2 years prior. The only symptoms I experienced were headaches and swelling in my hands and feet which I thought were normal for any pregnancy. I went to my normal doctor's appointment and found that my blood pressure was very elevated. I was only 29 weeks along. I was not only seeing my regular Dr. but I was regularly seeing a neonatologist for frequent ultrasounds to check on the babie's progress since I was considered to be a "highrisk pregnancy" I was immediately admitted to the hospital. Within 24 hours I was diagnosed with preeclampsia. Within 48 hours my weight had ballooned up by 8 pounds and my kidneys had... Read More

My pregnancy was great. Very little sickness and no complications, until......33 weeks. I went to my doctor for a checkup due to excessive swelling, weight gain, and overall feeling of something wrong, which began in my 32nd week. After taking my BP and urine, I was sent home on bedrest and ordered to complete a 24 hour urine test. I went back 2 days later for the results. The doctor told me that protein was in my urine and I needed to go directly to the hospital. I didnt know what to do. I wasnt prepared for this news. I had NO travel bag, nothing for the baby..and they expected my BP to go down?! I was admitted for a few days, I was put on Magnesium Sulfate and everything is a blur... Read More

I suffered from pre-eclampsia 8 days postpartum. I did not know what was going on. I had just had a c-section and my daughter was in the icu. I was on my way to the hospital to see my daughter, and stopped by my doctor to have my incision checked due to discharge, and as a routine they check your BP, well it was very high and elevating by the minute. I was sent to the L&D floor and was immed. put on magnesium for 24 hours. This was the most horrible day of my life my newborn was in the icu, they were taping pillows and blankets around the bed (in case seizure occured). I am glad that i am here to be able to tell my story so maybe it can help someone. Please if you have any symptoms... Read More
