Foundation Fulfills 3 Roles at Annual Clinical Meeting in San Diego

Last Updated on Thursday, April 05, 2012

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists President Dr. James N. Martin recently provided updated progress on his Presidential Preeclampsia Initiative. Dr. Martin explained that under Dr. Jim Roberts' leadership, a 16-member Hypertension in Pregnancy (HIP) Work Group has been working hard to achieve consensus on best practices for care of pregnant woman with any form of acute or chronic hypertensive disorder. After rigorous review and grading of the published literature with subsequent debate, discussion and eventual agreement, the expert members of the Work Group are devising recommendations for practice that will impact all Ob/Gyns. Plans are underway to release these in several formats within the next 12 months that will facilitate their incorporation into clinical practice.

Dr. Roberts will be providing an early peek into what's happening in the world of preeclampsia and how the HIP Work Group recommendations will guide obstetric practice at the May 7 opening session of the College's upcoming Annual Clinical Meeting (ACM) in San Diego, May 7-10. Following his presentation, Dr. John Barton, a practicing Ob/Gyn and Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist on the frontlines of obstetric care, will review how obstetric practice will change in response to these new recommendations.

"Lastly and very important," states Martin, "Eleni Tsigas of the Preeclampsia Foundation will direct our attention to the role and response of the patient to preeclampsia when it impacts her pregnancy."

On Wednesday, May 9, Dr. Marshall Lindheimer, will provide a rarely heard perspective on the full history of preeclampsia. Considering it was first defined 2,000 years ago, this could be a long lecture!

Dr. Martin's task force has not only directly involved Tsigas in these efforts, but the College has also named the San Diego Promise Walk as its charitable event for this year's ACM.  More than 100 Ob/Gyns will join the Foundation Sunday morning for an early morning 5K fun run, with all proceeds to benefit the Foundation.  The doctors have formed teams based on their geographic district which we're hoping will provoke some good-natured rivalry. So which District will earn the most money for this devastating disorder that they've all seen too often in their practices?

And if you're wandering the vast exhibit halls of this enormous conference, be sure to stop by and see us in Booth #1019.  We'll have lots of materials to assist physicians with patient support and information, videos demonstrating the impact of preeclampsia on families, a survey asking providers about their own beliefs and practices about patient education and probably a drawing or two for "fabulous prizes."

Drs. Martin, Roberts and Lindheimer are all members of the Preeclampsia Foundation's Medical Advisory Board.
